A herd of ravenous goats played a role in saving the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library after a fresh wildfire erupted Wednesday near Simi Valley in Southern California, forcing officials to order evacuations of nearby homes.
In addition the firefighters and aircraft crews that responded Wednesday, a hungry herd of as many as 500 goats had helped create a firebreak months ago in the brush that surrounds the hilltop complex, officials said. The goats last spring ate up vegetation that could have fueled the fire.
"One of the firefighters mentioned that they do believe the goats' fire line helped them fight this fire," library spokeswoman Melissa Giller said. "They just proved today how useful they really are."

Barbados lamb is the bomb!
I posted too fast lol! I have learned to loave goats...especially if they dont scream like the ones in the video. A good goat can be every bit as loveable and friendly as the family dog. They will follow you all about and come when you call them. They tend to be shy with strangers but not all are. Mine gave me a gallon and a half of sweet milk every day..good milk, not goaty milk. Mine ate alfalfa and mixed grain so she had good milk. I sold milk and I made cheeses too.
It just takes a minute to get used to those eyes! If you have a good goat, she can be a wonderful family companion with a never ending sense of humor, and feed you well, too. They’re a bit easier to keep and cheaper to feed than a cow.
Go to most any larger grocery store and you’ll find lamb chops in the meat case, no goat chops...anywhere.
My folks kept goats for years, but you couldn’t sell the milk and nobody wanted the goats to eat.
You have a shortage of Filipinos.
Well, there goats the neighborhood.
So I suppose this “goat” news will result in most of the moslems in the U.S. moving to that region of CA? Isn’t this news sure to be spread at all the mosques by the organization “Goat-Humpers R Us”... Just asking...
Must be, it’s a rural area with no large cities.
You take kid goats to the farm auction and you are lucky to get $20. Raise one up to butcher size and you might get $40.
I’ve been talkin about the goat solution for at least a decade probably two. They eat everything - poison ivy, sticker bushes, name the flora... a goat will probably eat it
I have heard that 70% of the red meat consumed on the planet is goat meat.
Goats eat everything practically and have great climbing skills and balance skills they can get up on the hillsides and eat away.
Roasted fresh goat meat is wonderful!
It tastes like a cross between pork and veal.
And fresh goat liver sauteed with butter is the only liver that is edible... even almost decent tasting.
Goat meat is good eats milk is good also and goat prices have gone up a lot in the last few yes and yes they are about like having a puppy follow you around
It may be great, but you will have a hard time finding anyone that wants to eat it.
Surprised the unions allowed the goats employment. Wish I was being sarcastic.
NAW- They just proved how much smarter goats are than californians.
I have eaten armadillo, but never goat.
You barbecue it up and I’ll eat it.
That’s a cultural thing vaguely like anglophones not eating horse. Neither tastes bad, Americans have just been taught that its weird so there is very little demand. If you dig into the reasons you will find that there were a lot of goats and goats eaten at one time in the US but that didn’t last long. Americans looked down on goat farmers as being poor, usually Eastern Europeans. A person that raised cattle was considered to be wealthier and as the demand for cattle grew those that could afford it would get rid of their goats and switch to cattle. Oddly, the draft capability of the animals also played a part in that “goats aren’t as good (in draft potential)” and many years ago there were very few animals raised by the common person dedicated to just one function. Animals were dual purpose or triple purpose breeds (meat/milk/draft) and goats just couldn’t compare.
BTW, its huge South of our border and not too many years back I had read an article (USDA?) claiming that the US was several million goats short of demand every year. I generally don’t like Mexican food but there is something really good about a goat face burrito.
