Russia, Turkey will take joint control of territory held by Kurds in Syria

Turkey and Russia will assume joint control of territory in Syria formerly held by Kurdish forces under an agreement between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Vladimir Putin reached Tuesday, according to The New York Times.

The agreement would reportedly force Kurdish forces to retreat another 20 miles from Syria’s northern border with Turkey.

“The situation in the region is very tense — we understand that,” Putin said before the negotiations began, according to the Times.

“I would like to express the hope that the level of Russian-Turkish relations that has been attained recently will play a role in resolving all of the issues that the region has encountered and will help find answers to all questions, even very difficult ones, in the interests of Turkey, Russia, and all countries,” he added.

“With my dear friend Putin, we will discuss the current situation in northern Syria, primarily to the east of the Euphrates,” Erdoğan told reporters at the airport in Ankara shortly before departing for the meeting with Putin Sochi, Russia.

Trump’s chess move got the perfect response from all the actors. US soldiers are in Iraq and out of harms way. Syria, Turkey and Russia are securing the buffer zone and the ISIS bad guys are locked down.

Wonder if Mitt will take the stage tonight and own his superior ignorance??

Syria doesn’t even exist as a country. For all practical extents and purposes, its a Russian province.

Note that its Putin and not Assad who is calling the shots.

There is no Syria. Its a fiction. The Russians are running the show and Assad does what’s he told by Putin.

Kurds live to fight another day.

The civilian populations are not uprooted and ethnically cleansed.

It would have been worse, if left up to Erdogan.

Lol...also note that the Syrian government is regaining large swathes of territory and resources without military resistance. To the victors go the spoils.

US troops being there only delayed the inevitable.

It's now up to all the groups involved to hopefully negotiate a lasting agreement on territories and borders.

If General Keane and Lindsay Graham and all the rest of them want to send troops there, then declare war.

If you break it, you take responsibility for it. Good luck Russia and Turkey.

And where in the story did it say ISIS bad guys are locked down? Who's holding the key?

I don’t think it is being discussed, but now we can try to avoid supplying the rebuilding funds for Syria. Should be easier if we don’t have (many) troops there.
