The Business Insider list looked into population change, the percentage of people with jobs, median household incomes, median commute times, the number of people living in poverty, and the percentage of people without health insurance.

Overall, Gary, Indiana ranked first, followed by Port Arthur, Texas and Detroit, Michigan.

California’s most miserable city is Huntington Park (10). Other cities in the top 50:

The full list ranks the top 1,000 cities based on Census data (note the list starts at line three; therefore the numbers on the left are off by two).

In other words, I’m kind of throwing up my hands here. There doesn’t seem to be any definitive rhyme or reason

What are the demographics?

These sorts of lists can be entertaining, but , it all depends on the criteria being used .

Also, if you are looking for jobs and/or places to live, you personally might very well find a great job and a very nice home in some of the miserable places.

Next question:

Which political party runs those ‘miserable’ places?.................

Agreed. This is a bizarre list.

Most Miserable US Cities Data (Source: US Census Bureau)

Los Angeles "typhoid city" is ranked 187 and not in top 10 (let alone top 50)?

Better yet, San Francisco "fecal matter city" is ranked 748?

Chicago "murder city" is ranked outside top 50 worst, at 78?

Everytime I see these stories about this Tarnished Godless hellhole, I think of that stupid commercial the girly man made.

We’re Number 1!!, it should be re-edited to show how we are #1 in , Homeless, Poverty, Welfare, Crime, Illegal Aliens, with The Girly Man smiling and saying We’re Number One.

If you look at the total list of 1000 cities, 210 are in California. 20% of the worse 50 vs 21% of the total list means California is actually beating the average.

They took every little suburb of LA as a city, that’s how it added up to “many”.

Big deal, Michigan is vying for the Worst Congresscritter Trophy. I think we have it in the bag.

Here are our players:

Rashida Tlaib
Justin Amash
Fred Upton
Elissa Slotkin
Anyone with the last name of *Levin or Dingell.

*Not Mark, of course, pronounced differently.

I hav no idea how close these rankings match reality, since these rankings always depend on criteria that are weighted according to arbitrary standards.

But I do have a clue why one city got its ranking in the bottom 1,000:

459
San Buenaventura (Ventura), California pop. 327,167,434

With that many people crammed into a small area, it is no wonder the misery index is so high!

Not really sure how New Brunswick NJ made it that far up the list. There are some crappy sections but generally it is a thriving town. Rutgers University, Johnson & Johnson, Robert Wood Johnson and St Peters hospitals, a very busy commercial district downtown. Not really miserable in my estimation.

Too much distortion based on municipal borders. To get a clearer picture you need per capita information and maps that show the concentration of factors that you are interested in. Otherwise you get an incorrect view.

For example, if NYC were divided up into smaller municipalities instead of one nearly 9 million population city, you would have a different result.
