Is it not in the Constitution that DC was to never be considered for statehood? Or am I misremembering?
DC did not exist when the Constitution went into effect in 1789. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress, and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state..................
"Clause 17: To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings"
would require a Constitutional Amendment.....not happening
Like Obama, I'm not a Constitutional Lawyer, but I also believe it would take a lot more to make DC a state than a Bill passed in Congress.
