Yeah, me too. I hated those darned things when I was growing up. I see the value in them now for folks in TEMPORARY need, but where I came from, this was a generational requirement. Mothers would pass down to daughters how to game the systems. Mama’s boyfriends would do the same for the sons. Everyone had a roof over their head, food in their belly and gas in the tank, but no one had a damned job. Why work when you can get buy on the government.

The temporary need I have seen has been with homemaker women who lost husbands (either through death or having them run off with some young hussy) and had children at home to feed.
Those could be trusted with a cash benefit. They seem very unlikely to use it to buy drugs or pay a bar tab.
