Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, wore brownface makeup to a party at the private school where he was teaching in the spring of 2001. TIME has obtained a photograph of the incident.
The photograph has not been previously reported. The picture was taken at an “Arabian Nights”-themed gala. It shows Trudeau, then the 29-year-old son of the late former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, wearing a turban and robes with his face, neck and hands completely darkened. The photograph appears in the 2000-2001 yearbook of West Point Grey Academy, a private day school where Trudeau was a teacher.

Even then the description "brown face" is a sort of gambit. He looks in black face to me. The Canadian television hardly knows which way to turn. Some defending, some gloating, because that is their thing. Which is to jump on somebody. Make somebody grovel My own opinion as a non Trudeau supporter, is that it is simply dirty pool.

I should mention that Canada goes to the polls in 33 days. This to either give Prime Minister Trudeau and his Liberal Party a mandate or elect the Progressive Conservatives. Polls say it is a neck and neck race at this point.

At one time the compact in Canada was the Liberal/Conservative coalition. In 1942 younger people began to resent the old hard line establishment. They decided to rename to Conservatives as the "Progressives". They wanted change without destroying Conservatism.
