Trump forces 'staffing up' to end GOP losing streak in Minnesota
STAR TRIBUNE ^ | July 14, 2019 | TOREY VAN OOT

Minnesotans have picked the Democratic nominee for the White House in every election since 1972. Trump, who lost the state by just 1.5 percentage points in 2016, believes he can end that streak. With 15 months to go until the general election, the GOP is doubling down on efforts to turn Minnesota red, putting national campaign staff on the ground and hosting a series of training sessions to mobilize Republican voters.

“We’re really excited to be very, very ahead of the curve as far as historically staffing up, especially in a state that the president came within 44,000 votes of flipping last time,” said Stephanie Alexander, the Midwest regional field director for Trump Victory, a joint effort by the Republican National Committee and the president’s re-election campaign. “This is the first time this has ever been done,” she added.

The early infusion of GOP resources reflects a growing perception that Minnesota could be a battleground state — a status it has rarely been accorded in modern presidential politics. Nominees from both parties are expected to aggressively court voters across the Upper Midwest after narrow wins in states like Michigan and Wisconsin sealed Trump’s path to victory in 2016. Campaign manager Brad Parscale told the political news site Axios that Minnesota is one of the campaign’s top pickup targets for next year’s election.

Minnesotans have picked the Democratic nominee for the White House in every election since 1972.

I didn't know MN went for Romney in 2012.

Something just occurred to me:

They can make amends if:

THEY VOTE FOR DONALD J TRUMP NEXT YEAR.

And now, off to bed.

Maybe it’s worded oddly, but what they mean, is that Minnesota has voted Democrat in every presidential general election since Nixon carried the state in 1972.

There’s another Minnesota streak that was broken in 2016. 2016 was the first time since 1956 where the Minnesota popular vote % was more Republican than than the national popular vote %.
This bodes well for Minnesota soon breaking its streak of voting demonrat.

It is the only state with such a distinction. I’m afraid it is fool’s gold.

The enemy is the Red Star and WCCO.
Fracture that stranglehold over MN and it might work.

that’s the fifth.. You’ll never flush a democrat out of that seat. That is where Obama and Dayton dumped 10s of thousands of refugees ( that will never leave)

same with St Cloud.

If Trump’s team is smart (and given their past shows, they are)

they won’t spend a lot of time in the inner city.

The votes are out in the areas Tim Walz says is just rocks and cows.

I live in the 8th, even the democrats around here are pissed off at the democrat/DFL party (DFL is minnesota’s democrat party)

First, if he could carve out half the votes that the Libertarian candidate got (total of 113k)...that would be a good fresh start.

From the 2016 county by county voting map, it’s only about 20-percent of the counties that went to Hillary, but they were all urbanized counties with significant Democrat votes.

If you dug into black votes, and convince a higher group to go over and flip to the GOP...I think he could pull in another 100,000 votes via that group.

This is the one state where I think he could grow his 2016 vote tally up by 20-percent...maybe going to 1.6-million total votes.

Trump has a shot there. Muslum immigration to the Twin Cities has been catastrophic. Immigration is a big issue there.

I have no problem with his team making a run there.

Wasting time and money. Trump won Minn, except for the Dem voter fraud.

They’ll just double their vote fraud.

Minnesota is lost cause!!!

It’s not who votes that matters, it’s who counts the votes that matters

All of those people will be demo-rats!

No. It did not confuse me and I think it is stated just fine. It states that the state’s voters picked the Dem nominee for the White House since 1972, which is stated perfectly clearly. No where does it state or mislead anyone to think the voters of Minn have chosen the winner since 1972. It states the voters chose the Dem nominee. That means the voters chose Hillary in 2016, Obama in 2008 and 2012, John Kerry in 2004, etc, etc. Not sure why you are confused.

Reagan visited and campaigned in Rochester, Minn on the last day of the 84 campaign because his team knew it would be close. It wasn’t quite good enough.

My father was born in Minnesota, although he did most of his growing up in Western New York. Still rooted for the Vikings, though.

I mention this because there are lots of good people in that state. It’s fairly conservative once you get out of the Twin Cities.

I would bet that suppressing the Somali vote in Twin Cities would do the trick. I can’t think of a more useless or despicable group of immigrants.

From what I’ve read, they even hate African-American Minnesotans — and the feeling is mutual.

As for Rep. Omar, she’s AOC without any of the amusement value. Just hate, pure hate from this creature.

The MN electoral votes have gone to the Democrat since 1972 (chose “picked the Democrat nominee. ) . In 76, 80, 84 MN Mondale was on the ticket. GHWB lost MN in 88 while carrying 40 states and the rest is history .

I wasn't confused. It is just the first sentance is badly worded. It says :

Minnesotans have picked the Democratic nominee for the White House in every election since 1972.

Which is very clear. But then they go on to say :

Trump, who lost the state by just 1.5 percentage points in 2016, believes he can end that streak.

Which by itself is fine, also. It means that Trump is going to end the streak of loosing Minn. But when you put the two together, that streak could be interpreted as referring to the streak of them choosing the Dem nominee because the only streak mentioned is the one of them choosing the nominee since 1972. Loosing a state by 1.5 points in one election, is not a streak. A streak requires something happening more than once.It should have been written as :

Minnesotans have picked the Democratic nominee for the White House in every election since 1972. Trump, who lost the state by just 1.5 percentage points in 2016, believes he can change that.
