The Student Senate of Californias Pitzer College has drafted a resolution calling for the removal of College President Melvin Oliver, after he decided to retain Pitzers study abroad program in Israel against the recommendation of the Pitzer College Council, made up of students and faculty.
The resolution calls for enacting no confidence in the President of the College, and for his immediate resignation or removal from office, the Claremont Independent, a student newspaper, reported.
The recommendation to suspend the study abroad program at Haifa University passed with a majority of 68 in favor and 25 opposing. Another eight voters abstained. Shortly afterwards, Oliver rejected the motion, stating that, I am refusing to permit Pitzer College to take a position that I believe will only harm the College.
The recommendation puts in place a form of academic boycott of Israel and, in the process, sets us on a path away from the free exchange of ideas, a direction which ultimately destroys the academys ability to fulfill our educational mission, Oliver wrote in a statement.
Olivers veto is the first in Pitzers 56-year history, the student newspaper reported, citing the resolution.
The college board of trustees in June 2017 overturned a Student Senate amendment enacting Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions, or BDS regulations to Student Senate spending.

If you are a Mudder, it was I and Charlie Speelbutt that stole the No Tell Motel sign from your dorm roof, not once, but twice. If you were from Pomona, well I am just sorry for you.
My years at Claremont made Animal House seem like a convent. Have no idea how I made it through. Only took seven years and Dean Heslop finally had to suggest, strongly, that I finish my studies off campus. I think he is in Hotel Fed now, no chit.
A lifetime ago I was accepted at Claremont Men’s College, was on alternate scholarship list, but did not get it. The group of colleges are beautiful but they have all gone insane since my youth. Got a scholarship to UC Santa Barbara and went there instead.
You’re right about Heslop. He spent something like 12-18 months in Club Fed for defrauding a So Cal indian tribe over construction contracts. He just got out. “Persimmon, persimmon, Scripps College for women.” I was at CMC. Entered with the first class to admit women. It remained “Men’s” until midway thru my senior year, when old man McKenna finally coughed up the big bucks. It was something like $22 million — a pittance to have a college named after you! All of the women who graduated with that first class were given a choice of having their diploma read “Claremont Men’s College” or “Claremont McKenna Ditto.” And but two or three chose “Men’s,” and those two or three changed their mind before graduation.
Were any of you guys at CMC contemporaries with David Bloom, the NBC reporter who died in Iraq? I knew David. Not well, but we crossed paths one summer in the mid-80s.
No, he was Pitzer 1981-84 (or so) and I was CMC 1976-1980.
