I, too, studied art history. A subject denigrated every day here at FR. It is art history that teaches one the importance of our 2,000 year culture.

No one should denigrate studies that don't result in making money doing accounting, dentistry or actuarial work. Loss of an irreplaceable landmark of art and religion is heartbreaking.

Don't remember the precise quote but something like: "A civilization can advance only so far as its artists see to point the way ahead."

Another: By U of Michigan professor Ulrich B. Phillips: "In darkness dwells the people which knows its annals not"

Yes, well said. It is often engineers here who denigrate liberal arts education but liberal arts was once a very vital tool in educating people. I realize that it has fallen on very hard times but for those of us who graduated before today’s pc autocracy, we know exactly what a loss this cathedral is to western civilization.
