It’s been traditional for quite a while for American Jewry (even some of orthodox theological bent) to ride the leftist political train. Their theory has been that American traditionalism would bring Christianity to the fore again, which in the old countries was marred by ugly pogroms. Therefore under lefty politics, it is concluded, Jewish survival would be more likely. We American Christians understand this as having been a terrible betrayal of our Savior, whose outreach per the bible is to the Jew and the “Greek,” but it’s a history whose dust has to settle. One conservative Jewish commentator whose name escapes me is warming up to relations with American Christians, who he sees as fighting with books and theology rather than with force.
That goes back to pre WWII Europe, where many Jews belonged to the Socialist Bund. The Bund was diametrically opposed to Zionism, because they felt Jews shouldn’t be concentrated in one country.
It maybe Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein that your are thinking of who died about 2 months ago. He made connection with the Evangelicals in America: Pat Boone, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Jack Hayford, Gary Bauer, Ralph Reed, Rich Buhler and many others encouraged him to develop ties with Christians in America. Pat Robertson and Joe Lieberman wrote tributes to him and his work.
