Otto Warmbier's parents push back on Trump over their son's death
Axios ^ | 3/1/19 | Orion Rummler

Otto Warmbier's parents have spoken out after President Trump stated that he took North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "at his word" after Kim denied any hand in Warmbier's death, which occurred after the American college student spent 17 months in captivity in North Korea and was returned to the U.S. in 2017 in a vegetative state.

"We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity. No excuses or lavish praise can change that."

I don’t believe Trump offered up “lavish praise”

He didn't, he used the exact same line he used with Putin, "I take them at their word' - which doesn't mean you agree with them, it's actually a very odd statement, almost doublespeak and for Trump it's appropriate when dealing with ruthless killers when he is attempting to protect 300 million Americans.

So now, silliness deserves the death penalty. What a world.

Certain Trump-haters want nuclear war.

Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto.

I just don't have sympathy for people who "vacation" in places like North Korea, China, Iran, etc. and, to make matters worst, go on to commit acts of crime. It's like people who stay in their homes during hurricanes and when they discover how bad it really is, they want someone to come and rescue them.

Otto bears some of this responsibility.

The “kid” was 27 and certainly old enough to grasp NK was a communist hellhole from the marxist media.

It’s a Communist police state. He was illegally there and he stole.

When you do those same things in a similar country, I won’t cry for you, either.

Can’t say as I blame their reaction.

I can. NK didn’t suddenly become an “evil regime” when their son died. He chose to go there knowing exactly what kind of place it was. Sorry he died but he made his own bed. His parents need to take ownership of that fact.

Yeah, they put him in the hospital, all right, but I read somewhere that he was in hideous condition. A comatose patient requires excellent care in order to keep from, frankly, rotting. Must be turned, cleaned, and repositioned every 2hours, to help prevent bed sores, and even at that, without ridiculously expensive special mattresses, they’re likely to get bed sores, anyway. As a retired nurse, I can tell you, a bed side can quickly rot the flesh right down to the bone, in a very short time.

“I hope his death taught the American people something so
that it wasn’t completely in vain.”

Do ya think our sanctions will cause a few thousand starvation deaths in NK ? Will hundreds of NK families curse the DONALD??

Gored Ox and all that .....

Nevertheless...prayers for Otto’s family....

I read an article that said Otto may gave been exposed to botolism. I only entertain the thought that it might be true because no other America, as far as we know, has been tortured to death by the N. Koreans

AFAIK, the Warmbiers are not leftists. Otto may have been a leftist since he was in college and thought nothing of traveling to a communist country.

Trump Tweet on the subject:

I never like being misinterpreted, but especially when it comes to Otto Warmbier and his great family. Remember, I got Otto out along with three others. The previous Administration did nothing, and he was taken on their watch. Of course I hold North Korea responsible....

....for Otto’s mistreatment and death. Most important, Otto Warmbier will not have died in vain. Otto and his family have become a tremendous symbol of strong passion and strength, which will last for many years into the future. I love Otto and think of him often!

“Many tourists do dumb things. ”

Yeah, he wasn’t a “tourist.” He illegally entered a sovereign country known for being pretty mean with its own citizens.

What, pray tell, is Trump supposed to do? Get Kim in a headlock and beat the crap out of him? Kim is a brutal dictator. It’s the way he was born and raised. He has nuclear weapons. Should America just go and turn NK into a pile of rubble, killing Kim and half the population to take out the nuclear facilities? How many more American lives would that cost?

If the president wants to try and get Kim to see a different life, a country that can prosper and a citizenry that can actually eat and work, is that not the better way? How is he supposed to deal with Kim? Should Kim be brought along until he disposes of his weapons and then killed? I’m sure that’s just what the guy is thinking.

I don’t know what I’d do if I were the leader of the free world. Where the hell is the useless UN on all of this? Where are they on Venezuela? Syria? Honestly, why are they occupying space and taking in zillions of dollars? What are they there for? I would be asking them to relocate, sell the land for big bucks, and use the money that would normally be wasted on the UN and put it toward infrastructure projects.

Was it President Trump's fault when the 7 year old Guatemalan girl died within hours of being in Border Patrol custody? I recall that Democrats said so.

well, you certainly are generous in your heaping of blame on Trump, aren’t you? What did you want Trump to do, start a f’n nuclear war over this exceedingly careless young man who decided it would be a great idea to go waltzing around a communist dictatorship that has a reputation for not only murdering it’s own citizens, but the family of the damned ruler? If you want to get ugly with someone over the death of this poor idiot that got himself killed, BLAME OBAMA who would not lift a GD finger to help this family, and who threatened Otto’s family with prosecution if they tried to ransom him out of NK. How the hell did someone so congenitally stupid get in here?
