The Democratic race has been portrayed in national outlets as a Hillary Clinton-Bernie Sanders redux, with Northam playing the part of Clinton and Perriello as Sanders, but attempting to superimpose a 2016 primary frame on the Virginia race is an awkward and imperfect fit.
There are some similarities to the presidential primary. Northam has the backing of the Democratic political establishment within the state.

The Dems will remove him, they can’t run race-based campaigns while supporting him.
He won’t survive the weekend. How could he explain being in EITHER of those costumes?
I see some libs coming to his defense, but the black Dems attacking him are passionate - almost in shock that this merits discussion. Blacks of any political affiliation should take note of who defends Northam, in light of the unfounded allegations of racism against our beloved president. Trump should publicly state in no uncertain terms that he is NOT the person in the second costume in that photo - and repeat that every day until Northam is out. It doesn’t help Dem defenders that his replacement will be the black lieutenant governor...why are they “keeping him down”?

If Mr. Northam were to resign, Lt. Gov. Justin E. Fairfax would assume the governor’s office. Mr. Fairfax, a Democrat, was the second black person to be elected to statewide office in Virginia.

I know - I think he was doomed anyway, but now he’s preventing a black guy from “movin’ on up”?
The blacks discussing this on TV seem confused as to why there is even any debate about this; the Dem party keeps the seat anyway, and for decades they’ve been whipped into a frenzy with stories of evil white Republicans doing exactly this sort of racist prank.
Those who believe he stays in office don’t understand how this plays out nationally; after the 2016 debacle (when black voters who distrusted or disliked Hillary delivered PA, MI, and WI to Trump), the Dems are more than ever beholden to black voters - and there is simply no way to spin this in a positive light. It can be used by Republicans in all 50 states against Dem opponents in 2020; he has to go.
Modern Democrats are the psychological descendants of the New England Puritans of the 17th-18th centuries but they have lost the connection to religion or have added the puritanism to a substitute religion.
