People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called on the University of Texas and the University of Georgia to end the use of live mascots after an incident before their Sugar Bowl matchup on Tuesday.
Bevo, the Texas Longhorns' steer mascot, charged Uga, the Georgia Bulldogs' dog mascot, before the game, creating a brief moment of chaos for the people around the animals. The pre-game kerfuffle caught the attention of the animal rights organization.
"It's indefensible to subject animals to the stress of being packed up, carted from state to state, and paraded in front of a stadium full of screaming fans," PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange said in a statement Wednesday. "It's no surprise that a skittish steer would react to a perceived threat by charging, and PETA is calling on the University of Texas and the University of Georgia to learn from this dangerous incident, retire their live-animal mascots, and stick to the talented costumed mascots who can lead cheers, react to the crowd, and pump up the team."

I agree. Bring it to my place. We will have a quiet dinner together. I will wrap the animal in many paper covered packages and it will never be subjected to screaming fans again.
I’m guessing these animals are taken care of better than most kids belonging to PETA parents.
I remember when UGA attacked an Auburn player after he scored a TD.
Most of the longhorns I’ve been associated with have been like big friendly dogs. Well, Blackjack could be a bit feisty on occasion when you had fresh alfalfa pellets.
Consider the source, from those who got upset with Obama because he did not pardon a Thanksgiving turkey quite “politically correct” enough for their liking even though he did pardon the turkey. “Thanks for pardoning the turkey but you didn’t pardon it good enough with the words WE wanted to hear” They just never will be satisfied no matter what.
I think PETA is right about this, although I am not really an animal lover per se. In fact, I believe pet ownership to be objectionable in many ways, especially when there are human beings all over the world and often right next door who need help from other humans. And pets can be an annoyance to others.
I just think animals deserve respect. Dressing them up in costumes and exploiting their nature for our entertainment is not way up there on my list.

We raised Santa Gertrudis and they were the same way. Quite gentle but sometimes impatient. Had bulls hook a pickup and turn it up on it’s side a couple times because we were taking too long to unload winter feed out on the range. :)
Bevo is usually more chilled out.

He was right about that one thing.
That actually happened to Bevo in the late 40’s (47?) when they played Texas A&M. He was stolen prior to the game and afterwards UT said “okay, game’s over please bring him back.”

You folks have a lot more experience than I do...my wife and I stayed at a working dairy farm in Vermont for a week, and one rainy day I asked if I could explore the property, and the farmer said sure, go anywhere you want...he suggested if I was interested, to take a look at their prize bull.
So, it was pouring rain and all mud, so I put on rain gear and walked down to where there was a structure with dozens of cows milling about. They stopped and regarded me, gazing with their uninterested look as they chewed, but sure enough, there was the bull, his head sticking FAR up above the backs of the cows.
And he had is eyes on me.
It wasn’t the dull, bored, disinterested look of the cows, it was a laser-focus, hostile look that made me fee distinctly uncomfortable.
And it didn’t waver during the fifteen minutes I was poking around. I haven’t spent much time around livestock, but I would wager that bull was somewhere between 1000-1500 lbs. And it was all muscle.
As I walked around, I could FEEL the thing looking at me, and when I turned around...it sure was. At one point, it put its front legs on top of some structure in the pen, and with an immediate feeling of danger, I thought “Jesus Christ. That thing can get out of there!” Then it went over to the gate and began pounding its head against the gate, and I thought “If that thing were to get out, I would be a grease spot.”
I decided I had enough sightseeing and left.
That was extremely intimidating to say the least. There was a definite feeling of a malignant presence that did not wish me well as I wandered around within the eyesight of that bull!
PETAs’s animal shelters kill more animals than any other.
