14 of the 19 attackers were Saudi, not one of them among the lead hijackers, with the most senior hijacker being an Egyptian with Syrian Muslim Brotherhood connections who was part of the Hamburg cell, which was led by two Syrians, one a cleric and the other a businessman and former Syrian intelligence operative, and included a member whose uncle was formerly an East German Stasi official. The planner of the mission was a Baluchi from Pakistan who was later captured in the home of a Pakistani microbiologist.
The Saudis have far more at stake in Syria and the entire Middle East than the U.S., so they will more than fill the void.
