In the 80’s with the Space Shuttle:

They settled into a pattern of orbital research of zero-g this, zero-g that, zero-g cr*p with a wiffle-ball bat.

They did that for almost FOUR DECADES..! Didn’t push any boundaries at all.

Totally ridiculous, and exactly what you’d expect from the Post Office incarnation of space.

Lessay in 1903 the Wright Broz at Kitty Hawk just turned EVERYTHING over the Da Gummint:

You think John Glenn just a little over 50 years later would have made the first US orbit in 1962..?

Nope, it was the private sector that really got them there, and had airplanes been 100% gummint we would juuuuust now be talking about getting an American into space in 50 years, MAYBE.

Elon is a teet sucker but as far as gummint waste is concerned his folly is very, very TAME.

So if we’re not going to Mars, why are we still going on with the Aries program. Time to defund NASA along with of host ABC cabinets, it’s the bullet and get back to the 18 enumerated powers of congress.

Ive worked for NASA for 3 decades. The old timers say things began to slide near the end of Apollo. I noticed the accelerated deterioration during the Bush administration (another thing to blame on Bush). At that time, NASA began to shift more to a bureaucratized, top down organization run bossiness types. Currently NASA has no leadership, is run by by a technically-challenged management cadre, who no longer listen to their research and engineering staff.

I hoped to have seen thing change under Trump. They have not, NASA continues to slide and is worse than ever. Huge amounts of the budget still fund the Science mission and its quest to prove global warming. Excuse me while I leave to take the latest transvestite/LBGT appreciation class. The way NASA currently is, you would think Obama is still President!

I know NASA is way down on the list for Trump, but come on, do something! Start by turning NASA back over to the researcher and engineers (including recruiting the best and brightest) and close several centers that only exist for political purposes.

Nixon. He and LBJ screwed up the Vietnam War, and he refused to give NASA a clear mission. Nixon had a choice between ending LBJ’s great society program and funding NASA OR he could keep great society and gut NASA.

He chose poorly.

The other side of of this is that aircraft were a technology that was developed by private individuals and private industry pushed development and in 50 years aircraft went from being barely flying to supersonic flight.

Spacecraft, on the other hand, were developed by government and did not change for 50 years until private industry started getting involved for its own purposes.

Isn’t it amazing that EVERYTHING that Muslim president touched so easily turned to crap. We’re giving vast amounts of time to less than 2% of our population in the LGBTMNOP issues, we are constantly hearing about how easy it is becoming to introduce “Muslism” in our schools and how easily and rapidly Christianity is being banned, etc, etc, etc.

Seriously, though: NASA was already a hopeless mess when I did some consulting for them back in the 1980s. Over 90% of its spending was on boondoggles for their favorite contractors, of which I'm sure an amount of "vigorish" found its way back.

The space shuttle was a terminally stupid idea, and the apology for a space station even worse. Saturn V and Skylab could have been transitioned into the next generation for one tenth the cost.

And Robert Zubrin's "Mars Direct" could have put a permanent base on the Red Planet twenty years ago.

“Before I knew him, my ex was part of the team that got Apollo 11 astronauts down safely. He was a WW2 fighter pilot and eternal GREAT Patriot.”

I have no doubt he was a great patriot.

May I ask you - was he involved in getting the LEM down safely on the moon, or the command module (capsule) to splashdown?

He was fortunate to participate in one of the most exciting times in America.

The STS. It never met a single one of its design objectives, despite becoming a black hole for money.

Splashdown. He was in that mission control room—he had framed photos on the wall of the den of astronauts after they returned, autographed: “Thanks for getting us down.” All the guys in that room got photos..

He also had a DFC for flying in the Pacific theatre, signed up at 18 the week after Pearl Harbor. Went to school on the GI Bill, started a company, left millions to his university for engineering school scholarships for American Citizens only. He was tired of foreign students getting free tuition, then going back to their own countries, particularly Japan, and working for rival companies. We were divorced years before he died, I have no idea whether the uni is still honoring his wishes, but they most assuredly would be if I were there to make sure they did.

NASA was destroyed in the early 1970s by racism (against white people); the democRAT Party and what we would today call “social justice warriors” did the destroying.
