For the record, here is what she said:
What is racist? You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was OK just as long as you were dressing as a character.
I think she got dinged because of the "What is racist?" phrase but also the tone she used during the "Back when I was a kid.." sentence. I got why some people were upset when I heard the comment: She came across as thinking "being in blackface isn't bad as long as you are in costume and it is during Halloween."
My post about Dr Seuss was about the importance of context. During the war pretty much anything about the enemy was ok. And most people get that and we haven't stopped reading Dr Seuss to our kids.
But where Mrs Kelly shot herself in the foot was thinking the context (Halloween) made it ok to dress in blackface. I can sort of see where people found her comment to be wrong: JUST because it is a costume doesn't mean it isn't offensive. For example, I find people dressed up as pregnant nuns to be offensive...yea yea, I get it, nuns are supposed to be celibate but this one did the deed it's funny ha ha ha. Now, I don't run up to such people and lecture them, but I sure won't invite them to my barbecue and I probably would give them a rock instead of candy.
Now, if a white kid dressed up as Hendrix and was in black face or if a black kid dressed up as Frank Zappa and was in white face, would people be angry nowadays? Maybe not, because they are someone specific and their costume isn't making fun of someone or something. At the DoodleBob house they'd get candy and no rocks.
Amazing they cannot fire her for low ratings ( poor job performance ) but they can fire her for this nothingburger.
she did not say anything wrong.
when i was a kid, my neighbors mom said N- word all the time. Sure she was racist. ( and she WAS racist, not for saying that word.) But if i repeat the story, does not make me racist.
everybody needs to calm down.
Racism is so frequently used that it’s the first thing blacks use whenever they don’t get there way........it’s also their ‘protected’ status and why they always threaten to sue if there’s even a whiff of racism, which is always in their space, even when it’s not.ll.... Unfortunately employers do not want law suits so any reference regarding color or race or a hint of this will be quickly stomped out.
Blacks are laughing about this by the way.....it’s their magic wand to get people to jump and how high.
