Thinking he's not doing anything productive just because you don't see or hear from him, does not necessarily lead to your conclusion that he has problems.
I think he is working on cases we have yet to hear about. And Trump knows it.
Otherwise, he would have fired Sessions before now.

The answer is, we do not know, just like we do not know a LOT of what Trump is doing behind the scenes or why.
Some folks just love name calling and character assassination, usually because they have an agenda related to personal failure like making failed predictions which are embarrassing to admit. Someone else must be blamed to cover up the highly embarrassing failed predictions!
An honest person with integrity would simply admit the failure rather than blame others.
But the Kavanaugh experience ought at least make people more modest in the hatred they direct at others.
