The move could force millions of poor immigrants who rely on public assistance for food and shelter to make a difficult choice between accepting financial help and seeking a green card to live and work legally in the United States.

But immigrants we are told are a benefit to the United States.

Well, Pelosi did say that every dollar of public assistance adds $1.48 to the economy, or some deluded thing like that.

When I got my green card, it was “understood” not to go on welfare. One of my buds in my circle, a Filipino guy recently renewed his green card this year and he told me he never went on any govt assistance for 10 years because he’s scared the govt will not renew his and ruin his citizenship status.

They are sucking up public benefits like food assistance and Section 8 housing. How is it that the NYT can write that the administration DEEMS them to be a drain on the country when the very fact they are sucking up those benefits PROVES them to be a drain on us? This is a textbook case of prima facie evidence.

GO TRUMP!! No Green Cards for leeches.

In other words, lots of illegal aliens are fraudulently getting welfare payments from the US government

My mistake. It was food stamps, and every dollar added $1.79.

Hole up! My parents sponsored my husband when we both moved back from the UK. I was DESPERATE TO LEAVE with our baby because I saw what was coming. Thing is....he was going to be a high earner and tax payer....and wasn’t allowed to go on the dole here. Paid thru the NOSE to make that happen and followed ALL the laws. But that was way before Obama.

Australia used to have a similar plan as well. Only professionals need apply. Don’t know about now.

Why should anyone leeching off of hardworking Americans be here at all, never mind get a green card (which are actually blue)?

But your parents were not on welfare, neither were your parents immigrants into the USA, I would wager.

I don’t see how the example of your parents approximates the crime-explosion causing Chain Immigration induced by foreign bums like Somalis in Minn., etc.

Most refugees are on welfare.
This shift says they can stay as refugees on welfare but won’t legally be able to vote.

I thought Welfare Reform, or was it the last amnesty in which the Democrats PROMISED would be the last amnesty, specifically provided for ZERO public assistance for these people?

How dare he. That’s obviously unconstitutional. At least, there’s an Obamajudge somewhere who will say so.

Hey! Let’s take some bets and find out what will happen after this announcement...

1. Federal Judge will rule against it.
2. Leaked memo or audio tape.
3. Poll will show how unpopular it is.
4. Someone will cry “Racist!”
5. Someone will mention “children”
6. Protests will be organized against someone, somewhere...
7. Social Media will disparage it and restrict access...

“1. Federal Judge will rule against it”

That's why Kavanaugh’s appointment to the SCOTUS is so very important! And it's why Grassley’s behavior is so outrageous! But then so is the behavior of Murkie, Corker, Flake and Collins!

‘bout damned time. I’m so sick and tired of immigrants ‘living on the public dole’ which literally translates to immigrants sticking their hands in the pockets of American taxpayers.
