Geneva (AFP) - Alcohol kills three million people worldwide each year -- more than AIDS, violence and road accidents combined, the World Health Organization said Friday, adding that men are particularly at risk.
The UN health agency's latest report on alcohol and health pointed out that alcohol causes more than one in 20 deaths globally each year, including drink driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse and a multitude of diseases and disorders.
Men account for more than three quarters of alcohol-related deaths, the nearly 500-page report found.
"Far too many people, their families and communities suffer the consequences of the harmful use of alcohol through violence, injuries, mental health problems and diseases like cancer and stroke," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.

So let me get this straight, if I quit drinking and start smoking dope I won’t have to worry about death?
This is a very poor topic sentence, since the writer then goes on to say that "alcohol" deaths include auto accidents and violence. They should probably also include AIDS contracted while drunk.

Yup, and alcohol is involved in a disproportionate number of motor vehicle accidents too.
That they include accidents where neither driver has had anything to drink but there’s a bottle of booze somewhere in one of the vehicles is beside the point, it’s the demon drink!
Marijuana won’t kill you, but driving under the influence of THC can. I know several people who won’t drive after drinking, but swear they can drive stoned on weed.

Certainly that’s one way the weak-minded among us could look at it. But not the smart ones.
I would look very closely at how related the alcohol and the death are for the WHO to count it as “caused”. A local talk show host joked that the definition of “alcohol related traffic accident” included buying a six pack, putting it on the back console on your car and being hit by it in the back of your head when you brake too fast.

Driving stoned is just as irresponsible as driving drunk.
That fact is inarguable.
Same kind of cooked book stats that make guns the number 1 killer of kids in America. IE A BUNCH LIES.

One should apply the same scrutiny to pot related accidents.
It’s not my problem if people want to drink themselves to death, it’s their choice. Many people drink and don’t die from it.
It’s you problem if they fly through your windshield.
The problem is not alcohol and weed, it’s the people driving while using these substances. Blaming the substances would be similar to people who are demanding gun control because people get shot.

Been a number of these anti alcohol essays lately. I guess it’s the next BIG assault by the left.
