After hitting a ten-year low for its NFL Kickoff Game last Thursday, NBC hit another ten-year low for the season premiere of Sunday Night Football.
Bears-Packers delivered a 12.5 rating and 22.1 million viewers on the Week 1 edition of SNF, down 7% in ratings and 9% in viewership from last year (Giants-Cowboys: 13.4, 24.4M) and down 5% and 4% respectively from 2016 (Patriots-Cardinals: 13.1, 23.1M). Including streaming, the game had 22.5 million...

Agree - if America was what it should be, the nfl would be hanging by a thread by now.
Too bad, the game matched the hype for once. The Packers spotted the Bears a 20-point lead before winning 24-23. A heroic performance by Aaron Rodgers.
I’m a woman and about 4 years ago at a family dinner I said the I hated women being involved in play-by-play for the major sports.
I had a daughter and 2 daughters-in-law look at me like I had lost my mind.:-)
.
Almost 50 years ago, my team, The Vikings cut their quarterback after he won the NFL Championship and got them to the Superbowl. He threw ugly passes and his runs were usually brutal, but he could play football better than any guy on the field. This last year, they had the same kind of quarterback, do almost the same thing, and they let him go for a guy who throw pretty passes and can’t play football as well as most, as his win/loss record indicates. Nike and Papa John’s and the NFL picked a bad year to mess with me.
Couple that with the current flag on every other play
Yep that is annoying, and hurts the flow of the game.
I also think they have more commercials than they did years ago. They go to a commercial bloc after a scoring play, then back for the kickoff, then go to another commercial bloc.
An NFL game nowadays takes 3 1/2 hours to play. Years ago, most NFL games took a bit under three hours. They are hurting viewership with stretching out the game they way they do, to accomodate TV.
I keep hearing about the demise of baseball here on FR. I watch a lot of baseball these days, and I am seeing big crowds at a lot of ballparks. Here in Houston, the Astros are regularly sold out or near it. I remember the last series the Astros had with the Rangers in Arlington, and even that last place team had most of the seats filled.
However, I will add that I stepped away from baseball for a long time after the last strike ('94 or '95?). Before the strike, I was Mr. Baseball; couldn't get enough of it. I did not consciously step away, but because the strike lasted so long, I found other uses for my time, and found I did not miss watching it. I tried to get back into it when it returned, but I just found it boring. For some reason, I started watching it again about 5 years ago, and now I catch almost every Astros game. It was fun to see them slowly assemble the pieces of a championship team after being the worst team in baseball.
It is a mistake for any entertainment venue to let their fans realize they don't really need them. I eventually came back to baseball after more than 10 years away. Some never do once they leave. I don't see myself following the NFL ever again.
I’m like you. Formerly Mr. Baseball, and now only watch a few games a year.
Never was a big football fan, but the NFL is completely dead to me. Still like LSU football, though.
The NFL I remember was the one in which a defensive lineman could pick up Terry Bradshaw, pile-drive him head first into a dirt field, and he’d get up and call the next play.
Not this over-over-over emphasis on making the game safe.
It’s never going to be.
The NFL is run by the Left and doesn’t care how it self-destructs.
It may come quicker then you think, it is a house of cards.
This is not a ‘boycott’ we are done with it!
Same old Bears-choking!
Will LSU ever get a QB????
Will the Gators ever get a QB?
I just don’t care about it anymore. I don’t even think sbout watching
Me either for the most part. My wife however doesn’t see the importance yet. She complains about the kneelers and then tells me to find the local game on Sunday.
Doesn’t look like it....
Because the NFL handled the protest thing so horribly, and because in the preseason two years ago Duane Brown held up a fist without consequence, I left the NFL. It was an addiction since the Luv Ya Blue days, and I didn’t think I could give it up. Turns out I was wrong. I love our military and first responders more than football. Unfortunately, I don’t see the NFL correcting this situation, so I moved on. Gotta be honest, though. I do miss JJ.
Since our ‘Stros ended up in the World Series last year — and since, like so many others, I needed a distraction from all things Harvey — I decided to watch. How could I have known that I was being introduced to my new addiction? I was convinced that, after the win and the parade and celebration, I would be moving on. I’m not sure what happened during the offseason, but I found myself itching for the season to start and was in front of my TV, snacks at the ready, on opening day. I have missed very few games in this my virgin year of baseball. I even had an opportunity to go to one of the games (logistically difficult for me, but it was great fun).
One of my friends is still watching NFL, but the rest of us have made the switch to MLB and don’t plan to return to football. I wish I could convince JJ to switch sports before he gets permanently injured. I’d like to see him come on over to the Astros. They love him. He loves them. A match made in heaven.
I wish I had more history with the team like you do, but if you’d ever told me I was going to become a baseball fanatic, I would have said you were crazy. I’ve come a long way in less than a year.
