PINE RIDGE, SC S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster announced a mandatory evacuation of the South Carolina coast on Monday. All eight the counties along the coast would begin evacuating as of noon on Tuesday, McMaster said at a press briefing on Monday. McMaster said he would reverse lanes on four main roads to facilitate the evacuation. As of noon Tuesday, lanes will reverse on Interstate 26 from Charleston to Columbia and Highway 50from Myrtle Beach. Highways 278 and 21 in Beaufort County will be ready for reversal as of noon, but officials will wait to make an order at that time. State offices and schools will also close in the affected counties on Tuesday, McMaster said. “We know the evacuation order I’m issuing will be inconvenient,” McMaster said. “But we’re not going to gamble with the lives of the people of South Carolina.” Florence would ore wind than Hugo and more water than Matthew, McMaster warned. Projections on Monday show the storm making landfall in the area of Wilmington, N.C., early Friday morning, but with much of South Carolina still under threat of seeing a significant impact. State lawmakers were saying the governor would order an evacuation beginning Tuesday. State offices and schools would also be closed in the affected counties, lawmakers said. S.C. Rep. Alan Clemmons, R-Horry, tweeted Monday afternoon that McMaster had announced to members of the Geveral Assembly he will order evacuations for the coast beginning at noon on Tuesday. S.C. Rep. Tim McGinnis posted to his Facebook page that lanes on major state roads would be reversed to facilitate the evacuations. As of 11 a.m. Monday, Florence had strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. On Saturday, McMaster formally declared a state of emergency, allowing officials to put hurricane preparations into effect and begin coordinating resources. The S.C. National Guard can also be deployed during an emergency as necessary. The state has submitted a request to President Donald Trump for a federal disaster declaration, clearing the way for federal funds and assistance for any damage from the storm.

If there’s anyone on the coast that needs a place to evac to, I can host a few people up here near Clemson where we shouldn’t get more than TS winds. It’s not luxury accommodations but it’s clean, safe, and free.

NEVER become a refugee/evacuee!

Agreed. I was working in Alabama when Hurricane Ivan came ashore. My hotel room door had a note indicating where to go for the hurricane shelter. My work was done. It was almost 8 PM. The airport in Birmingham was already closed for flights, but Hertz could get me a car. My colleague had the van that he drove down from Tennessee. I arranged for Hertz to get me a car to drive drive from Birmingham to Salt Lake City. I departed at 10:30 PM from the airport. It was already raining. I drove to Clarksville, TN and stopped for some sleep. Next leg to Grand Island, NE. Stopped for some sleep. On to SLC...arriving at 8:20 PM at Hertz. 1800 miles in 46 hours door to door (including sleep). Stayed the night in Draper, UT and attended the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in the morning as originally planned.

Joe Bastardi said on Hannity this WILL be the worst (dollar) hurricane in US history. If so, we will see non-stop 24/7 blame Trump through the mid-term election. Women, children and minorities hit hardest.

My wife is dragging me to Asheville on Wednesday so she can watch the World Equestrian Games while I sit in coffee shops and bars and read FreeRepublic. Should be interesting. Any advice for a good watering hole, especially those with good music?

All will be getting the "Dirty side" since the storm will hit at a 90 degree angle instead of the usual glancing blow.Potential to be very mean.

The "Dirty Side" to me means the North East Quadrant of the storm which is always the strongest quadrant.

North of the eye gets onshore winds which of course brings higher ocean surge. On the south side, an approaching storm blows away from the coast.

I sold my 39 ft sailboat last month and left South Carolina Saturday morning. Sounds like good timing to me as I'm now in southern Illinois.

I spent my honeymoon in September 1989 on St. Thomas. I was there when Hugo hit. When I heard it was coming I thought in would be a good adventure and was pretty excited. Boy, was I wrong. I would never sit through another one if I had the option to get out (which I did not then).

Gov. Scott down here (Florida) has done excellent preemptive work ahead of storms.
Last year (Irma) he ordered all tolls suspended, one way traffic on selected routes and waived many a rule so truckers could deliver essentials expeditiously afterward. To all South/North Carolinians .....get out now while the gettin' is good.

If you have time to kill, you may enjoy a tour of the Moog synthesizer headquarters and factory downtown, there’s a sound lab with visiting musicians, you can play around with a theremin yourself too, which is cool.

You guys seem to know a lot about Asheville. We are scheduled to arrive there Wednesday and stay through Sunday. Do you think there is a significant risk being there if this storm hits as they say it will?
