At this point, weve all just made peace with the idea that climate change will devastate the Earth, right? As far as food is concerned, it is now easy to imagine a world without coffee, wine, bananas, avocados, chocolate, crops whose mere presence in the worlds food supply is threatened by a warming planet. But some climate-change experts stress the fact that complete extinction is less of a threat than the ways smaller adjustments will affect our food chain. The unpredictable ways in which our food system takes up shocks and stressors is the really compelling story here and it is going hugely underreported, says Ed Carr, director of Clark Universitys international development, community, and environment department. The entire global food system is a nightmare on the horizon.
Carr warns that our modern food system is interconnected in ways we will fail to truly grasp until a single shock or stress impacts the system. He says, Add multiple shocks, or even several moving parts, and that uncertainty compounds.
Take, for example, that iconic brunch drink, the Bloody Mary. It is often called the worlds most complex cocktail due to the sheer amount of stuff thats in it. Even a normal Bloody Mary - one that isnt garnished with, say, raw oysters or an entire fried chicken - contains far more ingredients than you might think (Worcestershire sauce alone contains over a dozen separate components), any one of which could be a victim of climate change in the future. You look at the glass and go, A lot is going on in there, explains Michael Hoffmann, who runs the Cornell Institute for Climate Smart Solutions. But if you take the pieces one by one, you start realizing tomorrows Bloody Mary is going to taste very different.

Mr and Mrs Howell are clutching the pearls
These are mostly hot weather plants. Bottoms up.
Seppuku, Mr. Rainey.
Seppuku.
It's the only way for you to save The Earth.
I don’t know about Bloody Marys, but “climate change” sure has destroyed the credibility of the mass media. What little they had left, anyway.
Yesterday, according to an article here on FR, minorities were going to be hit the hardest by global warming. This is doubly devastating news for Bloody Mary drinking people of color.
The AGW crowd have become their own laughing stock in their attempt to blame every tick from “average” on human activity.
Y’know, they can’t even decided if it is global warming or cooling, and prove that it would be bad.
Global warming would make huge areas of northern land arable or create longer growing seasons. The crops don’t go away, they just migrate.
Climate change.
Is there anything it can’t do?
Climate change “reporters”.
Is there anything useful that they can do?
Warmer temperatures and increased CO2 result in more agriculture.
Looks like it will be ok to drink martinis at any time of the day again....
Count me in!
Rum is just sugar cane. Wine is just grapes. A Bloody Mary is just a vehicle for horse radish anyway.
“At this point, weve all just made peace with the idea that climate change will devastate the Earth, right?”
Wrong asswhipe.
When we have cold Spring seasons here in Maryland it decreases crop/food (farming) production.
So warming can have positive as well as negative effects on food.
While it will be in the low 90s this week here in general our recent summers have not been overly hot.
Got 12 Quarts of my own Bloody Mary Mix already canned and in the pantry - with more to come.
All ingredients are home-grown. Just waiting on UW Badger Football to crack the first one open. Life Is Good. :)
“This is doubly devastating news for Bloody Mary drinking people of color.”
Good thing purple drank won’t be affected, or it could cause riots.
I'd venture he spends a lot of time looking at his cocktail glass.
Really stupid. Climate change doesn’t cause anything. Climate change, if it were to exist, would be an effect, not a cause, of rising temperatures.
No more Bloody Mary’s. Sounds like a first world problem to me.
Yep. Lying scum.
