Homeless people wearing barcodes to accept cashless payments

Homeless people are wearing barcodes around their necks in an attempt to increase donations in a cashless society, under an Oxford University backed initiative.

A new social innovation project, called Greater Change, hands homeless people a QR code, similar to the kind issued for online tickets.

Passersby who wish to give money - but who may not have any change in their pocket - can scan the code using their smart phone, and make an online payment to the person.

The donation goes into an account which is managed by a case worker who ensures that the money is spent on agreed targets, such as saving for a rental deposit or a new passport.

Drug dealers accepting cashless payments in 3,2,1......

Yeah, I'm doubting that dealers are looking for anything that leaves a paper trail, electronic or otherwise. :)

Look at 666 in Hebrew. It’s basically |||. In other words, a bar code as would be interpreted by someone a few thousand years ago.

They'll take whatever they can get.

There's no receipt identifying the product sold, anymore than there is for the initial charity.

I can see an advantage to doing this....have the ap on the phone also inform the person who is donating how much they have collected that month....I have nothing against helping some one out but most beggars you encounter at gas stations and grocery store are professional and collect more in a day then a low paying job.

I find it hard to believe that many people are walking around England without a buck in their pocket which they could donate. Maybe they CHOOSE not to donate to the homeless. If their panhandlers are anything like the panhandlers here, they will use the money for purposes you would not want to contribute towards.

It is an intriguing concept to donate to their social worker. I wonder how long it will take for fake QRC codes to be devised so the money goes towards credit at their local liquor store.

I don’t give to beggars.

I give my money where it will do some good instead of enabling a drug addicted deadbeat to continue in his addiction.

Not so. The UK has never been part of the Schengen open-borders area. You need a passport to enter (but not leave) the UK, whether you’re coming from elsewhere in he EU or from outside the EU. If you’re travelling from Britain you need a passport to get into any other EU country except the Republic of Ireland, with which there’s a bilateral agreement predating the EU.
