Donald Trump Previews Executive Action to Keep Illegal Immigrant Families Together

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would sign a “preemptive” effort to keep illegal immigrant families together, previewing executive action on the issue.

“We have compassion, we want to keep families together. It’s very important,” Trump said. “I’ll be signing something in a little while that’s going to do that and the people in this room want to do that and they’re working on various pieces of legislation to get it done.”

Trump spoke about his plans during a White House meeting with Republican members of Congress about trade and immigration enforcement. His tone was markedly different from comments he made on Tuesday defending his administration’s commitment to enforcing the law.

“We have to be very strong on the border but at the same time we want to be very compassionate,” he said.

The president admitted that his executive action might not hold up in the courts, but cited former President Barack Obama’s DACA executive amnesty as an inspiration.

“When he signed it, he said I’m really not allowed to sign it, I’m going to sign it anyway,” he said commenting that several judges actually held up the legality of Obama’s executive action.

Establishment Republicans grew increasingly nervous about the dramatic media coverage of the zero tolerance border enforcement policies, signaled growing concern during the meeting.

Just listened to news report on possible legislation. What I don’t understand is why they are not simply being turned back. Legislation could do that if there is some holdup—e.g., anyone crossing the border, whether at approved crossings or elsewhere, shall be returned to the bordering country. If they are requesting entry, authorities will accept their application prior to them returning to that country. Mexico, for example, gave them legal entry and is hosting them. Let them stay there until and if the US grants them entry. Besides, why not stay in Mexico, which often shares a common language and has already accepted their entry. Based on that, they have no fear of persecution or other basis to claim entry to the US.

Depending what the bill says this could be the right politic move, violating the Flores Settlement Agreement (Flores).

Libs keep saying there is no law stopping Trump from just writing an order...

Over and over calling Trump a liar.

If he was lying about it then the Federal government can imprison them all together(over 20 days) , if its reversed by the court proof Dems and the MSM was lying.

Libs can sue to get the kids released separating them..

What is illegal about this? I think this is perfectly legal. ICE policies are the domain of the Executive branch and Trump is the leader of the Executive.

Making an Executive decision that when families are caught trying to sneak into the country that they shall be detained as a family, and not broken up, seems very reasonable and humane. It is, imo, the right thing to do.

Which is not to say I agreed with the ridiculous, over the top, sensational hyperbolic demagoguery of the MSM. ICE was simply following the policies that have been in place a long time, the same policies they had during the Obama admin. Trump is fixing a problem that Obama failed to fix. I am 100% in favor of keeping families united whenever possible. In this case they will be detained together, and often returned together as a unit. That is the humane, ethical, moral thing to do.

So I applaud this move. And I want to see the MSM eat crow over it. The Trump talking points are easy to write - he is going to say that ICE had been following the Obama/Clinton policy of breaking up families and as soon as he learned he could fix this outrageous policy he took immediate action to end it. MSM has no choice but to either ignore it and re-program the week, or to give Trump the kudos he deserves.

It’s amazing to us (at the ranch) the illegal can scratch up $3K to pay a Coyote to smuggle them into the U.S., but we the American taxpayer’s are charged to pay the lawbreaker’s attorney fees as they fight to stay in our country.

Funny I just said the same thing but in more words. I am sure that will be the main thrust of the talking points. Breaking up families was the policy for 8 years of Obama. And who can forget how Janet Reno snatched Elian Gonzales from his home in the dead of night and sent him to Cuba, of all places?

Obama+Clinton = break up families.
Trump = keep families together.

“Keep Them Together In Mexico.”

My wife pays little attention to politics but she believes that the tragedy is that Mexico is unlivable for so many people. Other countries as well.

I always wondered how due process works in these cases. What if an illegal entrant was arrested and claimed, through his lawyer, that he was an American born citizen? Isn’t the burden on the government to prove that he isn’t an American? If he claimed to be American, he would assert his 5th Amendment right to remain silent. He doesn’t have to prove he was born in or naturalized into the US, the government has to prove he wasn’t. How could the government ever prove he was not a legal US citizen? If he remained silent, they might not even know his name.

If they just come across illegally, shove them back across.
If they claim amnesty, from whatever, ask them which country they are claiming amnesty from (Mexico is not included in that list). Whichever Central American shithole they claim, say fine, sign this paperwork and we’ll process your claim. Then, shove them and their kids back across the border into Mexico where they are “safe” from whatever oppression, and they can wait in that “neutral” country until we process their paperwork (when pigs fly). Should be within the law and we don’t let them stay here while they are being processed.

IMO this will just empower the media, celebs, et al. to continue their attacks and feeds their ego because it works (in their mind at least) “See what WE made him do!!”

The move does box them back in too. They might challenge it, but that’s not a winning strategy.

I never understood why we didn’t just bring them back to the border and drop them off.

These kids should be in “cages” for no more than 6 hours.

They aren’t from Mexico ? Well they aren’t from the USA either. But they came from Mexico so just push them back.

If the problem gets to be too big, use ordnance.

I see your point but I don’t think it will work out that way. First, they spent the last 24 hours in a frenzy and were all set to attack with a much more refined and coordinated message. Trump just pulled the rug out from under them. So they have a choice- drop the topic from coverage, or, report on it while ignoring the change in policy (a bad idea), or, report kudos for Trump.

No matter what happens they are going to attack Trump. So Trump is free to do what he believes is right. And in this case I think he made the right decision. He took a crappy, immoral policy enforced by Obama and ignored by the MSM for 8 years before Trump, and now Trump has fixed it and made the government a little more ethical, moral and accountable. All good things imo. It is bonus if the MSM has to eat crow over it.

I agree. Trump knows the media’s game, and he plays them like a fiddle. Funny how they haven’t figured it out yet. I guess Wily Coyote never learned either.

I disagree with those who say that Trump is capitulating. Trump knows that the goal of Liberals is not to solve a problem, it’s to attack him, no matter what. So he has to get up on the floor and dance with them, and then spin them right into a wall. Bush, Romney, etc, never learned how to master this tactic.

Yes, they boxed themselves in, actually. Trump really is very good at this. Much better than people expected. I am not sure what the MSM/Opposition expected would come of this. They thought they found a bludgeon to use all week to bash the Admin and instead Trump just snatched it out of their hands. Now he is the hero by their standards, and Obama+Clinton are the bad people according to their standards.

And yet there is more to it than just the political deftness. IMO he actually is doing the right thing. What is the purpose of breaking up families? What practical difference does it make in keeping them together? IMO it makes no logistical, legalistic or practical difference at all. But it is the moral and humane thing. It is not the fault of the kids that their parents dragged them who knows how far across the desert and into criminal act. So why punish the kids? Keeping families together even in these circumstances is imo simply the right decision to make.

The problem is, the next President can change it again. That's not safe.

I hope Pres. Trump can close the deal in a satisfactory way.

The problem is when the children are not really the children of the folks dragging them across the border.

Yes I just wrote the same in #36. He either trolls them into making themselves look like fools, or he finds a way to neutralize them almost every time.

This was an easy one though. Whether Trump’s own idea or the product of brainstorming by his staff it is brilliant in its simplicity. No doubt they saw the news yesterday, and saw Lewandowski get flamed, and they had to know the MSM was preparing a full frontal assault. What should they do?

In no way is this capitulating. It changes nothing in terms of enforcement. It just keeps families together while they are being detained. I like that. It costs nothing, changing nothing, and yet is the obvious and moral thing to do.

If you want to stretch the argument further, it is more evidence of why we needed a leader like Trump instead of another professional liar. Obama had 8 years to make this very simple decision but it likely never even crossed his mind. The MSM didn’t shed their crocodile tears for him. But if this is truly a question of morality then be glad we elected someone who wasn’t tied to the old ways of doing things.

Furthermore, if keeping families united is a moral imperative for the country, then let’s start re-evaluating all the Child Protective Services policies and actions. I’d expect that they should need to meet a very high burden to remove children from their parents’ home.

Well that is indeed an issue - a much bigger issue than you let on but I suspect you deliberately chose not to state it explicitly.

I read a horrifying statistic that something like 75% of women and girls are sexually assaulted during the trek into the USA. The MSM is in a fit over an off-color Lewandowski comment but flat ignores the stories of brutality on a mass scale because it does not comport with their narrative that unfettered immigration is a good thing. Like most criminal behavior, once you accept your criminality it is easier to justify additional and often more heinous crimes. Sneaking women into the USA for cash suddenly become sneaking women and children into the USA for cash and rape. Horrifying. If it were impossible to sneak in, at the very least it would end the child trafficking and sexual assault that occurs under the current MOA.

Whether the kids belong to the parents is a good question, but it is one that can be easily answered with a simple, cheap saliva swab test.
