John McCain helped build a country that no longer reflects his values

Arizona Sen. John McCain - scion of Navy brass, flyboy turned Vietnam war hero and tireless defender of American global leadership - now faces terminal brain cancer.

I am a scholar of American politics. And I believe that, regardless of his storied biography and personal charm, three powerful trends in American politics thwarted McCain's lifelong ambition to be president. They were the rise of the Christian right, partisan polarization and declining public support for foreign wars.

Republican McCain was a champion of bipartisan legislating, an approach that served him and the Senate well. But as political divides have grown, bipartisanship has fallen out of favor.

Most recently, McCain opposed Gina Haspel as CIA director for "her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality" and her role in it.

Having survived brutal torture for five years as a prisoner of war, McCain maintained a resolute voice against U.S. policies permitting so-called "enhanced interrogations." Nevertheless, his appeals failed to rally sufficient support to slow, much less derail, her appointment.

Hell, what about George W. Bush? In 2006-2008 he was worst than Hitler basically, the media and the Left viciously bashed every which way to Sunday. Now he's some wise sage to them when he says anything negative about President Trump.

The cycle always repeats in the end. Trump is only "the worst President ever!!" until the next Republican President.

“Vietnam war hero and tireless defender of American global leadership”

What BS! A better description would be a traitor and disloyal ingrate.

There’s the old saying you judge someone by the company they keep.

We all remember how McCain and his POS campaign chief Steve Schmidt treated Sarah Palin.

McCain is a putz without honor and duty. He deserved to lose.

Somehow, I can’t remember hearing any of this praise from the MSM in the Fall of 2008.

Scion of Navy Brass? LMAO. He was an 0-6 Captain whose last assignment as a congressional military aide and a convenient marriage to a beer distributor’s daughter from Arizona helped set him up for politics.

“Songbird” is no Vietnam hero either, except in his own demented mind.

As founding director of the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts Boston, Dr. Sherman...

This is why, sadly, we must push back against simply allowing more women to serve in political positions.

For every one Sarah Palin, you get dozens of Nancy Pelosis.

And we're still waiting for an American "Margaret Thatcher".

They loved McCain as long as he was a thorn in Republicans’ sides.

The media quickly turned against him when he threatened Democrat power. Throughout it all, he remained their devoted friend.

There’s nothing that commends him to me or that makes me want to like him.

John McCain helped build a country that no longer reflects his values

Doesn't reflect his values? Ha!

I dare say it reflects his fleckless, self-serving double standard values to a tee.

His only problem is he didn't get to be president and he no longer controls "the message"

Like he had any.

He promised to vote to repeal Obamacare and then he voted to keep it.

A man of his word, indeed.

Personal charm? I voted for the guy and have some satisfaction with his actions as a Senator but he is not known for that!

Charm, no. But the guy didn't fade into the wallpaper. He had a talent for getting his name (and his comments) into the papers. If you're able and willing to attract attention like that people can't help wondering what you'll say next. For all McCain's hatred of Trump (and vice versa, maybe), they do have that in common.

“She wrote this piece for The Conversation, where it first appeared.”

“Conversations” has been transformed by liberals into “struggle sessions” where conservatives grovel and submit, or else.

Trump demands attention because he’s trying to further his program of making our country great again.

McCain demands attention because he thinks he deserves it because he’s HIM.

I do see a difference.
