What if the kid hit a Grandma or little kid on his joyride? The owner would be guilty of enabling the kid to kill someone by leaving the keys in the car. No win situation.

"I’ve always been taught in various CCW or tactical classes that you CAN’T employ deadly force against a thief who is moving away." It varies state to state. In Texas you can use deadly force to protect property as well. At least that was the case as of a few years back. I am not aware of any change on that count.

I think the basic message is correct. Having your car stolen because you parked it with the keys in it and left it running is very irritating, but is not justifiable homicide.
