CHINESE warships have confronted US Navy vessels today in what has been described as a “serious incident”.
The tense naval drama unfolded after the American warships sailed near South China Sea islands claimed by China.
The presence of the US warships was slammed by Beijing just as President Donald Trump seeks to make peace with North Korea to avoid a serious war breaking out.
The operation in the South China Sea was the latest bid to counter what Washington condemns as brazen efforts to take control of the strategical important seas.
The hotly contested region is also rich in fossil fuels which China desperately needs to feed is industrialising economy with cheap energy.
While this naval drills had been planned months in advance, and similar operations have become routine, it comes at a particularly sensitive time.
It comes just days after the Pentagon uninvited China from a major US-hosted naval drill.

Vietnam was, according to a Green Beret roommate of mine, all because of the oil in the Mekong Delta. A fact that the then America supporting press neglected to mention.
I've seen reference to it exactly once in the MSM, a mention in passing in a boat people sob story about how they had to black out and very quietly slip by the drilling platforms to escape.

Yep, pure malarky. Article doesn’t include a anything about an “incident”. This kind of stuff happens all the time in what can be considered contested areas of the oceans. The Soviets used to shadow and try to provoke US Battle Groups all the time. I suspect they still do. But like the Chinese, it’s just chest beating. The USN could destroy them both at the same time, even in different oceans, if it came to that. God bless our sailors, airmen, and Marines.

A) Yeah and WWII and Korea, leaded gas at $.25 a gal. so?
B) Possible but doubtful, as stagflation began in ‘65; the gas lines were in ‘73 and Nam ended in ‘75; Carter was in 77. So time must have been running backward the or something which makes all the confusion understandable in hindsight ...

1. Yes, it is true that today’s navy is far more combat capable. More reach and far more deadly.
2. Every carrier that goes to sea does so with a full complement of combat ready aircraft. And the other 1/2 of that are not ready are in maintenance, refit or training, as they always have been.
3. We have ALWAYS had a 3rd of Carriers out for maintenance and refit.
4. We have about 70 DDGs and they are at sea regularly. 3 were involved in collision due to derelict captains.
5. We decommissioned 5 of the 27 Ticonderoga CGs. They rest will remain in service until they are replaced with bigger, more capable Burke Flight III DDGs.
In fact, the only thing you posted that was true, is for this Navy to be as good as it SHOULD be, it will take years to fix it, NOT decades.

It’s about territorial waters, which include mineral (oil) rights, fishing, etc. Not to mention projecting military and political power.
