Retired English teacher corrects letter from Trump and sends it back to White House
The Hill ^ | 05/26/18 | Josh Delk

A retired high school English teacher says a letter she received from President Trump would have barely earned passing marks, so she corrected the letter and sent it back to the White House.

Yvonne Mason, an Atlanta resident who retired this year after teaching middle and high school students in South Carolina for 17 years, corrected grammatical mistakes in the letter bearing Trump's signature, including 11 instances of improper capitalization of words like "president" and "state."

"If it had been written in middle school, I'd give it a C or C-plus," Mason told South Carolina's Greenville News. "If it had been written in high school, I'd give it a D."

She did not attach a letter grade in the letter she sent back to the White House.

Mason acknowledges the letter was likely written by a staffer. She received it after penning a letter requesting that Trump meet individually with the families who lost loved ones in the Feb. 14 high school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

"When you get letters from the highest level of government, you expect them to be at least mechanically correct," she told the newspaper.

"It's stylistically appalling," she added, comparing Trump's writing to the "exquisite" letters she's received from South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R) office.

The teacher said the White House response did not address her request specifically.

Most of her “criticisms” are petty, at best. My favorite is the use of “OMG” by an English and grammar snob — priceless! Thankfully, she’s retired.

I prefer a good President like Trump anytime over a great writer.

In 1820 the highest levels of government in Missouri often couldn’t read or write and signed their names with an x. The same men could, however, recite every word of a speech given by another legislator at the last session from memory and debate the issues of the day without referring to or taking notes, and deliver the most eloquent of speeches, exceeding even those of Lindsey Graham.

I wonder if she’s ever taken a gander at the capitalizations in George Washington’s writings:
Charleston [S.C.] July 23d 1796
Sir
Before the arrival of Mr Purviance’s Vessel last Fall, on board of which it was intended that Royal-Gift should have been shipped for Baltimore, that most inveterate disorder called the Farcy, which I believe to be incurable in a warm climate, plainly manifested itself on him. The effects of that disorder had debilitated him to such a degree that he could not be travell’d to Charleston. He lingered with it all last winter & part of the Spring and finally fell a victim to it. I can only regret that Royal-Gift was brought hither by my instrumentality, being urged by several Gentlemen of this Country to make the application. I have, now, no doubt that he was affected with that disorder at a very early period after his arrival in this Country because it was found impracticable to fatten him and because running ulcers about the legs the usual symptoms of the Farcy always attended him.
Notwithstanding the repeated applications made to Mr Fraser I have not been able to prevail on him to render an account of the second years covering, of Royal-Gift, at his house, but as he was only to charge for the Mares or Asses actually in foal, I don’t believe that more money will be recovered than will pay for the hire of the groom. I am Sir with the greatest Respect yr very H. Servt
W. Washington

Mason’s bank account ain’t as “exquisite” as Trump’s and compared to Trump she has accomplished nothing with her life. How many people has this condescending dummycrat employed? How many payrolls has she met? What a conceited human being this witch is!!!

I looked at the letter, NOTHING wrong with it. For example:

“Capitalize the word Nation if used as a synonym for the United States”

She probably agrees with other enlightened writers that Obama’s nonsensical speeches were eloquent and highly intelligent. “This isn’t who we are” - oh, so intelligently thought out and spoken, it makes me tingle.

Perfection in grammar and letter writing was an obsession in my years (75). The date must be here...etc etc....

Now....I'm looking for content....the feelings and flow.

Don't care if you occasionally make a typo or spell something wrong (FR police are always on the alert).

And teach the children how to write instead of print.

Thanks for that - I was googling around because it feels like it adopted a different style guide.

The letter, as written, conforms to the USGS standard.

Something a simple english teacher probably isn’t aware of.

In response to Trump’s capitalization of Nation as a proper noun...

>> OMG this is WRONG!

Ironic.

The retired ‘English teacher’ is an idiot.
