Putin, Macron bond over shared unease at Trump's actions

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Friday found a common cause in their shared unease at U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions on Iran, climate change and international trade.

Speaking at a question-and-answer session in front of an audience of business executives and Russian officials, Putin said the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran deal was damaging and counter-productive.

Macron said he would try to convince Trump to return to talks about Iran’s nuclear program, and was also critical of Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

“That was not desirable,” Macron said, adding that the embassy move played a part in sparking fatal clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces.

During the session, Macron sat alongside Putin, referred to him as “Dear Vladimir”, and the two men nodded in agreement with each other about a range of issues.

Macron said that Trump had, de facto, lost an international argument over the Paris climate change agreement because the international consensus in support of the accord had held, even though Trump had decided to exit the deal.

As he sat alongside Putin, Macron referred repeatedly to the need to establish “European financial sovereignty” - a jab at European economies’ reliance on the U.S. financial system.

He also arrived in St Petersburg with a large delegation of French business executives keen to sign deals with Russia, despite the new U.S. sanctions.

Putin accused the United States of undermining global trade rules by using sanctions as a weapon in its drive towards protectionism.

The Russian leader pointed to the presence of large numbers of foreign executives at the event as evidence that the U.S. sanctions were failing to achieve their aim.

We should “rename” Macron, maricon! It’s the Spanish word for “queer!”

So Macron is colluding with Putin and both are uneasy?

Good.

Had Macron pegged as a fair weather friend from day one. He’s done nothing to change that opinion.

What they’re really saying is these things are in American interests rather than their interests - thus they don’t like it. Real Americans very much do like President Trump’s reversal of everything Hussein did and stood for.

It seems Europe has more in common economically with Russia these days than with the United States.

Will this lead to the EU lifting trade sanctions and/or Russia adopting the Euro for settlement of energy contracts?

If Europe decides to buck the Trump administration, it might...

Putin along with the Chinese now hold the mantle for globalism and klepto-capitalism. Western Europeans join the pact alongside powers like Iran under euphemisms like “Paris Climate Accord” “Iran Nuclear Deal” and “Two State Palestine Solution.”

French elites have a history of holding a mythical concept of Russia as the great balancer of the U.S. hegemony they so resent...(yet benefit from and are ultimately protected by.)

They are all too ready to compromise moral and political ideals in the name of economic expediency and a flawed notion of a “multi-lateral” world where the U.S. does not call the shots.

The French are deluded if they think they have much to gain by handing the reins of their future over to the Chi-coms and Russian oligarchs, in their attempts to make the U.S. an outlier for doing the right thing. (Like our declaring of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and pulling out of Iran deal.

Trump has made some tough calls. So the U.S. may seem alone and isolated in some ways now...but these decisions will be rewarded in the long run. It’s the way the universe works.
