Stacey Abrams wins Georgia Democratic gubernatorial primary
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | May 22, 2018 | Greg Bluestein

Former House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams won the Democratic nomination for Georgia’s top office on Tuesday, defeating ex-state Rep. Stacey Evans and advancing her quest to become the nation’s first black female elected governor. She will face one of two Republicans in November in the race to succeed Gov. Nathan Deal, a competition that will test whether the state is truly competitive after more than a decade of GOP rule.

“We are writing the next chapter of Georgia history, where no one is unseen, no one is unheard and no one is uninspired,” a jubilant Abrams said, adding: “And I know for the journey ahead, we need every voice in our party - and every independent thinker in the state.”

Abrams attracted national attention, big-name endorsements and millions of dollars in outside spending with her “unapologetic progressive” platform to flip the Georgia governor’s office for the first time since 2002.

Doesn’t pay her taxes, 9 months pregnant and shouting at the top of her lungs about the virtues of abortion, can’t wait to blast the Civil War carvings off the side of Stone Mountain . . . she’s a Democrat prize, all right. And she’ll get 99% of the black vote.

Guess we’ll be seeing more “Black Pac” commercials. Already want mid terms over. Time to turn off the tv for a few months.

Has anyone asked her what her plans are for the budget? For public safety? You know, things that Governors are supposed to do?

Or is it more about being the first black woman Governor and a speaking slot at the next DNC convention and everything else can go to Hell?

“unapologetic progressive” platform = fundamentally communist

My state senator said the Dem primary voting strength is about 60% black, and that based on that he expected Abrams to win handily. He called it months ago.

Well, Georgia, you stand a chance.

In modern times the only time that Rs won the Governorship is when the D ran a woman (K T Kennedy) and a Black.

If I were a cynical type person I may opine that Maryland has a problem with anything other than a WHITE MALE and would even elect an R to prove it.

But I won’t say anything like that.

Oh did I mention that MD is sort of LIBERAL?

Not another “Red” (i.e. Progressive)? That state has enough of them esp. since the Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga) days of hate and rage.

Abrams owes more than $200,000 in debts, including about $54,000 to the IRS. She has said she’s on payment plan to pay back the debt, and has sought to frame her struggles as evidence she understands the problems that Georgians face.

Regarding your observation of Maryland, I correctly predicted that Larry Hogan, Jr. would upend the Black Democrat nominee, Anthony Brown (as with Kennedy-Townsend, the sitting Lt Governor). KKT’s problem wasn’t her gender, it was having to carry all the baggage of Parris Glendening, who was mighty unpopular (and benefitted due to voter fraud in 1994 over Ellen Sauerbrey, the actual Republican winner).

Brown’s problem was different: He’s from PG County. He might as well be a space alien to most Marylanders. Once a White Republican county that was home to Larry Hogan, Sr. (who represented it in Congress and even elected him County Executive), DC Blacks flooded into PG County in the 1970s onward and turned it into one of the most Democrat enclaves in America (and White Republicans voted with their feet).

Even to White liberal Democrats, it is considered a ghetto (far more so than Baltimore City, which gave a higher GOP vote than PG County does), and they don’t trust PG pols, period. If Rep. Donna Edwards (a PG’er) had won the Dem Senate nomination in 2016, Kathy Szeliga would be the junior Senator from MD today. Sure, these guys will vote for Zero, but if a Black PG candidate (probably even a Black Bawlamer candidate, a la Elijah Cummings) get the nod for statewide, they are utterly toxic to White Dems.

Take a look at the 2014 Gubernatorial race, Hogan won all but 3 counties (PG, MontCo & Charles) and Balto City. Hogan’s performance in all 4 was above average for a Republican. Unlike Ehrlich, who was facing White Dem O’Malley in 2006 (and a subpar rematch in 2010), and ended up losing both times, Hogan has sky-high approvals and will face a likely second tier (or de facto second-tier) challenger this time. I would not be surprised to see him get 60% of the vote, and probably pick up Charles County and perhaps get to 45% in MontCo, 25% in Balto City & even 20% in PG.

Worse yet for the Dems is if Hogan ends up facing PG Exec Rushern Baker or Ex-NAA”L”CP Chair Ben Jealous, it’s gonna be a race-hate fest, and Hogan himself may end up getting an unusually high percent of the vote from both (Dem) Whites and Blacks as a result.

Also, a curious factoid, no Republican since Ted McKeldin in 1954 has won reelection as Governor in MD.

Here is the list of the top three things things that black voters use to decide what candidate to vote for:
  1. Is the candidate black?
  2. Is the candidate black?
  3. Is the candidate black

So Democrats succeeding in their black vs. white identity politics. Racism won tonight, Democrats lose as the further marginalize their party.

You are correct and you have a good breakdown etc.

I was just being speculative by pointing out that whenever a WHITE MALE isn’t running, the Rs stand a chance.

I think O’Malley really wanted to run when KTK (remember she ‘started’ as Kennedy Townsend and when she started slipping, Townsend sort of disappeared...Guess she figured the Kennedy factor would fall in..NOT realizing - like HRC - sometimes the fix just isn’t enough when the candidate is a first class A Hole..) but kind of stood aside for her.....

Of course when O ran against Ehrilch, Bob didn’t stand a chance.... I think (if I recall correctly - that Ron Smiths wife was pretty high up and ‘they’ were fixing to use the collusion card against her because E & S were pretty ‘tight’...OK when the LIBS do it...

‘We’ lost a good one when Ron went on.....

Not smart, if they wanted to win they’d have gotten someone who could appeal to suburban Whites, the kind of people that left Atlanta cause of people like this.

I doubt that. Governor (especially in a non-potus year) is one thing, Senator is another. For the first time since the 17th amendment no states split their tickets for President and Senate in 2016, I have trouble believing whom you might call a high 2nd tier GOP candidate at best, would have run 16 points ahead of Trump and won no matter who the (much better funded) rat candidate was.
