Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said on Sunday that voters need to use the ballot box to achieve change on gun control in the wake of the deadly shooting at a Santa Fe high school last week.
"People at the state level and the federal level in too many places in our country are not doing anything other than offering prayers," Acevedo told CBS's Margaret Brennan on "Face the Nation."
"We need to start using the ballot box and ballot initiatives to take the matters out of the hands of people that are doing nothing that are elected into the hands of the people to see that the will of the people in this country is actually carried out," he added.
Acevedo aired his frustrations on Facebook on Saturday over the Santa Fe shooting.

Yeh because it’s just too much trouble to put a metal detector and armed guard on the door.
It should be no surprise to anyone that the Houston police chief came over from Austin.
Funny, according to recent polls, the will of the people is against gun control, putz.
Well then Chief, this must mean electing persons who want to implement solutions that are proven to effectively deal with the criminal and tragic misuse of firearms but fully respect the rights of the law abiding.

How about if we said “We need use the ballot box to curb people’s first amendment rights’?
Ah, so the public can vote to invalidate the Bill of Rights!?

Don't kid yourself.
Get an assault weapons ban on the ballot as a referendum and it would pass in a landslide. Every minivan-driving soccer mom would vote for it.
The 1st Amendment is under the same assault as the 2nd is. Put a "hate speech" ban on the ballot right next to an assault weapons ban and don't be shocked when they both pass by landslides.
Constitutional? That's up for debate but in the meantime, the new laws will stand until some judge says differently.
Start by voting YOU out.

The first act of gun control should be to Protect our Public Servants and Public Employee’s

The official should act in the person's best interest and keeping those
unalienable rights is best for them, even if they don't realize it.
IIRC, most states have laws which prohibit local governments from passing ordinances that are stricter than state law.
I’m Paul Revere on the following: newly passed GVRO/Red Flag laws now allow anyone to denounce a gun owner to police as being a danger to others. The police obtain a GVRO and knock on the owner’s door and his guns are gone.
Oversimplified? Due process followed in all cases? Google GVRO and learn. Potential for abuse is enormous.
Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't think of gun bans via ballot initiatives years ago.
That doesn't stop them. They'll pass the laws and then the state governments will have to fight to overturn them. And if the state elected officials agree with the new local ordinances, they're not going to fight very hard.
Case in point, wait and see how much effort Colorado's Statehouse puts in fighting Boulder's new assault weapon ban.
