Sacramento PD releases body cam video of 'viral' idling arrest

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —

Sacramento police released body camera video Wednesday of a man being tackled by an officer during his arrest for leaving his car running outside of a convenience store.

The incident began Friday morning when the officer approached Craig Williams about leaving his car running and unattended outside of a 7-Eleven in the 1100 block of 43rd Avenue. Police said Williams was uncooperative and the officer tried to detain him. In response, the man resisted the officer, which led to the struggle, police said.

The body cam video shows the officer approach Williams outside of the 7-Eleven. The officer tells Williams that it is a misdemeanor to leave a car running and unattended. In the video, Williams responds saying he was standing nearby.

In the video, the officer repeatedly asks Williams for his identification. Williams asks "Why?" adding he didn’t break a law. He then pulls out his cellphone to record the officer.

In the body camera video, the officer tells Williams to put down the cellphone, walks toward him and says, “I’m going to detain you.” The officer then grabs Williams’ left arm and puts it behind his back.

Williams is then heard asking, “What are you detaining me for?”

The officer responds, “I’ve already told you, sir.”

“Why is it a crime to leave my car running?”

I can tell you this.

It is part of California’s Eco-fascism.

It’s not a law they passed for safety.

It was passed to keep global warming at bay. I’m not kidding. California is that crazy and that Orwellian that it is illegal to idle your own car in your own driveway.

Because climate change.

New cars with the fobs are interesting and a bit unsettling at first.

Push brake and push button to start the car, if the transponder is nearby.

I don’t dislike it, but why not just have a chip implant?

Ordinances are not the same from town to town but I learned back in the 1970”s that in my hometown it was an offense to leave a car running unattended. I am not aware if the law has been changed since then.

Idiocy. On parade. You.

Is that sort of abuse really necessary?

I appreciate the information.

So now apparently a political hoax has the potential to get a person killed by an agent of the state.

That is truly frightening.

“Bet you think that guy should have been executed on the spot huh?”

This seems to be the irrationality of the liberal cop haters here.

It’s all or nothing. No reason, no rationality, no judiciousness.

You just think they’re all fascist thugs.

That’s why I make fun.

These aren’t serious threads.

In this case, the cop told him it’s illegal to idle your car like that.

It’s simple. The guy then turns off his car. It’s over.

He didn’t want to. So, he gets a ticket, which he didn’t have to get. The cop told him in the first place.

The guy refuses to show ID for the ticket. Etc...

BLM and all liberals would say cops just have to let anyone do anything there is no law.

"To serve and Protect" is the SACPD motto emblazoned on the side of their cars.

What is not part of the motto is who or what they serve and protect, which is the government.

“So now apparently a political hoax has the potential to get a person killed by an agent of the state.”

Yeah, but that’s not what did it.

If he refused a ticket for jaywalking it’d be the same etc...

Why not refuse to cooperate for shoplifting.

For burglary?

Etc...

Where does it stop?

I saw this awhile back on liveleak. I looked for a longer clip but I could not find one. Is there more to this story than meets the eye? I am not one to jump to conclusions because of a video clip.

Williams responds saying he was standing nearby

So, I suppose charges of loitering and mopery will be added.

Careful Mariner, or you and this guy will be faces charges of conspiracy to loiter, and organized mopery. You better hope you never leave your engine running after dusk, or you will be looking at mopery in the nightime.

Law or not.

I wouldn’t go so far to say only idiots do that. I would say to leave your vehicle running and unattended is unwise from both a theft and a liability angle.

And yet... REMOTE START SYSTEMS were a very popular option on many American Cars.

WTF business of yours, or anyone else’s, is it if another person chooses to leave their vehicle running while they go into a store?

Seriously. How is that your business?

I’ve seen SACPD do it dozens of times, at the very same store.

Right next to my truck.
