The number of illegal border crossers in Canada will soon surpass the 25,000 Syrian refugees Canada accepted in 2016
There are so many Mounties needed to process illegal border crossings in rural Quebec that the federal government is now spending $250,000 to build an unofficial police station on the U.S. border. In Toronto last week, Mayor John Tory announced that the number of refugee claimants in the citys shelter system has quadrupled from 459 per night in 2016 to an average of 2,351 in 2018. And at least one Quebec politician is calling for a border fence with the U.S.
These are just some of the repercussions of the more than 20,000 illegal border crossings into Canada since early 2017, all of them made by foreign nationals seeking asylum. With the influx expected to grow even bigger this summer, here are the details of Canadas ongoing migrant crisis.
Illegal border crossers are outpacing conventional refugees for the first time
In the first three months of 2018, 5,052 asylum seekers were intercepted by the RCMP after illegally crossing the Canadian border, compared to 4,475 people who filed refugee claims through conventional channels such as airports and official border stations. In other words, for the first time there are more people illegally seeking asylum in Canada than making legal refugee claims and that trend is set to continue throughout 2018.
In 2017, the Immigration and Refugee Board received at least 18,149 claims from what they call irregular border crossers those who claimed asylum after first entering Canada illegally. This was compared to 29,276 people who applied for refugee status through legal channels. But with the rate of illegal crossings already double what it was in 2017, the illegal category is poised to blow past the legal category.

How many countries will these idiots seek asylum in ? Send them back to their Home country
Sorry little brothers of the North. We protected you for 500 years, but that time is coming to a close and the world is knocking on the door of your fertile, sparsely populated socialist medicine nation. A shame you all have to spend 1/4million for a police station on the border. That’s probably one day for us. I imagine medical costs will go up, too, as you absorb a population intent on taking advantage of every benefit, at the expense of your own people. Good luck.
Justin Trudeau INVITED them in. His problem.
No no no! Don't call them "irregular," Mr Canadian Bureaucrat. They're "undocumented". Don't hurt their feewings. Besides, any irregularity is a temporary consequence of substandard diets while on the road.
I feel sorry for Canadian Conservatives, not that moron child Trudeau. We have to remember that Trump is about all we have standing between us and total ruin due to BOTH legal and illegal immigration. We’ll have to FIGHT HARD to keep enforcing our border and immigration laws. If the Demonrats get in in 2018, or worse, 2020, they’ll go right back to screwing us over royally.
Europeans are the new Jews, due to their “leaders” rank hatred of the Natives.
That's if they cross at an official checkpoint. If they don't cross at an official point of entry, as things are now, Canada can't send them back, because they don't officially know how the asylum seekers got to Canada.
Now some in Parliament want to change the law to designate the whole country a point of entry and send asylum seekers back to the US, where it's assumed they are coming from.
If I've read the article correctly, there's much hypocrisy in Canada and Trudeau inviting asylum seekers when they actually send many back to the US.
Last summer my niece and I drove to Canada, and approached the border with passports in hand. We reached an empty Canadian Border building, stopped, waiting a while for an Agent who would allow us to enter.
Seemingly no Border Patrol were in the area, and eventually we entered Canada, apparently unobserved; stayed two weeks. We used a credit card as payment for lodging, etc. No one asked to see our Passport.
On our return trip, we were required to provide our U.S. Passports to Border Agents before entering the United States again.
Well, hark off ya hosers! Ya let ‘em in , eh? No use cryin’ about it now.
