Why Democrats Should Get On Board With Universal Employment
WBUR Public Radio ^ | April 25, 2018 | by Miles Howard

Posted on 04/25/2018 10:14:07 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Two years ago, the Democratic frontrunner running for president scored votes and pundit points by reasoning that universal health care — among other big ideas being floated by liberals at the time — was too difficult: that progress happens in increments, and not earthquakes.

That was 2016.

This year, likely Democratic contenders for the 2020 White House race have embraced not only single-payer, but as of this week, an even more radical idea that makes government health care look like an exercise in political moderatism.

Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booger and Bernie Sanders have each called for a program that would guarantee a job for every able-bodied American who wants one. It’s a grand, loud, on-the-nose reincarnation of the emergency employment programs in Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal. As with universal health care, it’s likely to be a big ticket talking point in the next Democratic Party primary and — hopefully -- the next presidential race.

This is one of those moments of necessity. The Democratic voting public is on fire and ready for a fight on the issues that matter to them. The Democratic leadership is timid and unsure of its next moves — even as their voters bay for a brawl with Trump and the GOP. These voters are looking for a new, robust party strategy that doesn’t involve arriving at the legislative bargaining table in pre-compromised form, as Democratic leaders are wont to do. The Democrats have now had more than a year to flex their muscles and swing for the fences with their trepidatious embrace of universal health care.

Today, with the jobs-for-all concept snowballing towards the arena of mainstream politics, it’s time for the Democrats to prove their mettle and their relevance to the voters they need most.

Cory Booger?! Is that a typo or an intentional dig at the New Jersey Senator?!

There has been a program like this for over 200 years. It’s called the US Military. Join, serve your country with distinction and in exchange you get 3 hots wand a cot, you get to see the world, meet interesting people and kill them if necessary.

Not going to get upset about this; it's the biggest pie-in-the-sky idea I've ever heard. And don't we de facto already have this, what with so many welfare programs and hand-outs?

What's truly amazing - disheartening - is that US Senators would propose this, and sucker voters would be for it.

Typical Dems pandering something for nothing to their lazy constituency. Who can’t find a job in Trump’s booming economy? No one, that’s who! The Dems have got nothing.

If they will guarantee that every able-bodied American who does NOT want one or who leaves their guaranteed job for any reason will get NOTHING...EVER, then I may be on board.

High-functioning mental issues are not an excuse either.

I just love how facts, and Trump, have utterly driven these people insane. There is simply no other explanation why otherwise intelligent people would, in a time of full employment and even labor shortages, would be militating for guarantees of “full employment.” If there was 12% unemployment, it’d be understandable (stupid as Hell given the record of socialist economic policies here and elsewhere for the past 100 years, but understandable); with 4.3% UE, it is downright insane.

Thank you, President Trump, for being the world’s greatest political Vulcan mind-meld. Contact with you reveals EVERYTHING about a person’s politics, but particularly among those who don’t like you.

Yeah, offer everyone a Government job paying $15 an hour with Government healthcare, and watch private sector businesses paying less than $15 with lesser Health Care COLLAPSE. Moronic idea of the century.

Full employment in the economic reporting sense which excludes people who have given up on the job market. Long term we are going to see more and more of the population excluded from the labor market as automation and outsourcing destroy low-skilled jobs. People 40+ aren’t going to have luck with our “retraining programs” and lots of people are going to lack the cognitive firepower to obtain economically useful skills and find employment.

If in 10-20 years its a choice between this and UBI, this is better than creating a class of bored unproductive subsidized people.
