On Thursday afternoon, activist Alejandra Pablos - my friend - will stand up in court and wait for a judge to decide the fate of her freedom. Ale, as her friends call her, was taken into custody by ICE and has been detained for the last 42 days.
Ale lost her green card and was put in line for deportation after a 2011 arrest and conviction on several charges including driving under the influence. She spent two years in Eloy Detention Center in Southern Arizona.
This January, Ale, a dedicated reproductive justice and immigrant rights organizer, was leading chants at a peaceful protest outside Department of Homeland Security offices in Virginia when DHS agents detained her. On March 7, she was taken into custody and not allowed to pay bond.
When we first met, she told me how her family came to the United States from Mexico, and how her undocumented status shaped her decision to have an abortion in 2017. The Trump administrations plans to increase deportations of undocumented immigrants, and to separate families to do so, made becoming a mother an unacceptable risk for her.
When I heard in March that Ale had been detained by ICE, I felt sick. Watching our immigration system devastate my friends life and the life of her family makes me feel helpless. But I am not helpless. I have a voice, and as a citizen I can speak out. I can continue to highlight the privilege that white supremacy affords someone like me.
For a long time, it was invisible to me, but now I know: Privilege makes the difference between feeling safe starting a family and fearing having your family ripped apart. It makes the difference between a slap on the wrist and begging a judge to spare you from deportation.

If she had genuinely lost a green card, she could apply for a reissue with roughly the same cost and hassle I would have to go through for losing a driver's license, probably less. Because if I lost my driver's license through DUI, I'd probably have to settle a hefty fine first.
She had her green card revoked for the convictions.
It was not “lost”.
Immigrants are supposed to be law-abiding and removed if they are not.
That’s the law.
Obama told the agencies to ignore the law, because he got away with ignoring the Constitution.
Holly, your “bestie” is a drunken baby killer. Keen choice o’ friends.
“You need to let me stay here so I can kill my baby...”
If it’s a reproductive issue, then the United States is our body, and we have a right to choose.
Good one!
“:^)
The deportee-to-be looks like a hooker and her good friend sounds like a dopey teenager...
The translation of the phrase "reproductive justice"? KILL THE BABY.
Holly Bland should be overjoyed at this news - it means that Ale, a dedicated reproductive justice and immigrant rights organizer, will now be able to lead chants at peaceful protests outside of Mexican government buildings.
How wonderful for her, for the Mexican government, and for the entire world!
Iv’e said it before, and I’ll say it again: DACA is CACA!
Why cant she go to mexico? Is she saying that it is some kind of hole of a smelly variety?
Delusions of relevance
Agreed...
What article of the Constitution contains the part about reproductive rights? I don’t recall that part.
It is a “reproductive rights” issue, but it’s the rights of the citizens that matter.
Citizens desire to “reproduce”, just as much as illegal invaders do, except that they are generally seeking to attain a higher standard of living before they reproduce. So by letting in too many illegal invaders, it drains resources from citizens and impedes their “rights” to “reproduce” by making it harder to attain those prerequisite living standards.
Hence, deportation of the invaders is needed to protect the rights of citizens to reproduce!
So did every President since Reagan, including Reagan.
Yes.
