President Trump declared on Wednesday that he would scrap a planned summit meeting with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, or even walk out of the session while it was underway, if his diplomatic overture was not heading toward success.

Mr. Trump continued to express optimism — verging on eagerness — about sitting down with the North’s reclusive leader. But as the momentum for a meeting grows in both Washington and East Asia, the president acknowledged that it was a perilous undertaking that could still end in failure.

“If I think that it’s a meeting that is not going to be fruitful, we’re not going to go,” Mr. Trump said at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, standing alongside Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan. “If the meeting, when I’m there, is not fruitful, I will respectfully leave the meeting.”

Trump may be mindful of the way Ronald Reagan won the Cold War by walking out of the faulty Reykjavik Summit. Only time in postwar history an American president walked away from a bad deal, and it showed the Soviets they were licked.

If a reconciliation and plan forward between the Koreas can happen, that is a huge blow the China’s communist regime.

And it is the last thing China wants. The potential for NK/SK reconciliation gives Trump another lever against China.

From what I have read, there may be one problem with that. The Norks don't have a jet that could actually make it to Europe. Think about that for a moment, here they are developing nukes and their country is so screwed up they don't have an airline industry in the whole country that could fly to Europe....

I would say since Reagan/Bush manipulated the fall of the Soviet Union without firing a shot but let's not quibble. I think at some point it could be possible for North and South to re-unite but I think that would take years of normalized relations and probably would not happen under an 8 year Trump presidency. However, it could certainly be set in motion right now.
