Sen. Mike Lee pushes back against Trump administration’s claim it had authority for airstrikes

Sen. Mike Lee issued a statement Monday criticizing the Trump administration for not seeking congressional authority before launching airstrikes in Syria.

“No President of the United States, no matter party or political ideology, has the authority to unilaterally start a war. While the president has the authority under the War Powers Act to respond when the U.S. is under attack or in imminent danger, such circumstances did not exist with regard to Syria,” Mr. Lee, Utah Republican, tweeted.

Yeah Mike, and I guess Trump should just notify Assad also, since our leaking government would have him notified before our forward military was.

LMAO, seriously?

I think honest principled criticism from Lee is less danger to Trump’s presidency than the false cheers and demand for more action from people like Lindsey Graham. The War Powers Act does not supersede the Constitution which is still the supreme law of the land.

I knew we were going to strike Assad, I heard it all over the news days before it happened, how come Congress didn’t know?

Congress even criticized Trump for announcing his intentions.

It seems to me that Congress was clearly notified.

Trump himself tweeted back in ‘13, that Obama shouldn’t strike Syria and if he did, he should get congressional approval.

The US, UK and France were not “starting a war.”

They were delivering a humanitarian warning message.

Trump screwed up by publicizing this thing . Remember when Reagan launched a surgical strike on Muammar Gaddafi in Lybia? No announcements or fanfare. He just did it - to warn Lybia and the world not to attack Americans overseas. That was a legit action.

Here, Trump’s purpose was equivocal. He started by announcing the “atrocity” as the reason. Later he indicated he was dealing directly with an imminent threat to the U.S.

Bottom line: America is not some sort of world cop with a “moral” obligation to punish “bad leaders” within their own sovereign nation. Ignoring national sovereignty for one’s own “moral” outrage pushes the world towards the darkness of global totalitarian government. The only legitimate reason for direct intervention and attack like this is an imminent threat to America’s safety and interests. Not clear we had that here. Maybe, but Trump obviated our purpose IMO.

Mike Lee is NOT one of the bad guys who has been doing everything in his power to undermine the Pres. A lot of Deplorables voted for President Trump because he promised he wasn’t going to stay involved in places where we don’t belong.

IMO acts of war are not war. War is what happens after someone fires the first shot. if you combine what the US is doing with troops and the air attacks why wouldn’t that be war?

Makes no difference.

He was wrong to advocate for that.

I don’t believe Reagan got Senate approval to hit Libya.

In the environment we’re in today, no military operation could be conducted under the radar if the House or Senate were involved. The Democrats would sell us out in thirty seconds.

So is a nation who attacks America because our government sanctions the murder of some 2000 babies EVERY DAY is justified because that nation is delivering a “humanitarian warning message”?
