A mother on a New York parenting blog wrote Monday that while shopping at the retailer, she gave her four-year-old daughter a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and "a woman stopped me to lecture me about peanut allergies." The child's mother then asked other moms on UrbanBaby if it was unacceptable to eat peanut butter in public. The anti-peanut butter backlash was swift and brutal. Most responses attacked the mother for potentially endangering children with peanut allergies. Some criticized her for feeding her daughter in a shopping cart, which they considered disgusting. "That's really inconsiderate," one person wrote. "So many kids have life threatening allergies to peanut butter. Eating it in a shopping cart GUARANTEES it will be smeared on the handle, etc. It's really awful you would do this. Sorry, but imagine if it were your child with the allergy."

An ages old remedy to an ages old problem. MindingYOFB is a full time job.
Processed foods are loaded with so many chemicals, fats, salt and sugarswhy even consider eating them if you have food allergies? Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and free-range meats.
I just think it is very callous to dismiss what is very serious event for some as kiss my butt ...I suspect that if you had a family member nearly die more than once because they could not breath, you might feel differently.
With regard to travel on a" common carrier", it is the responsiblity of the person with the illness to assess the risk and find a way to manage the risk. Taxpayer-supported schools are a different matter. But a private airline does not have to turn itself unprofitable over the requirements of various illness communities, as I found out when my spouse got severe turista just before we were to board a flight, and they wouldn't seat us near the potty. So we had to pay for a later flight and another stayover.
I agree with you about the service animals.
One problem is try as parents might, it is extremely difficult to guarantee that a product is not exposed if using anything you did not grow yourself...Easy to flippantly say, eh well just grow it yourself or go get a charter plane...harder to do in real life. My brother lost a lot of money to ER visits...so could not afford to fly anywhere when his daughters were young. He did not complain, but he did spend lots of time in ER. Imagine, things like going to a birthday party or restaurant could be perilous.
As I stated in another post, when I had niece over for holidays, it was quite a task to contact every food manufacturer to determine if there was peanut exposure—even if no peanuts in the product I was using, if it was processed at a plant where peanuts processed, it was dangerous...Even small amount can be highly toxic to those allergic...
I just thought people should know...
O
Exactly. My attitude on this has nothing to do with smoking as an example, and everything to do with nanny-state legislation and its impact on business and personal freedom.
It is a fact that this attitude will generate more legislation while decreasing the ability to do business, not to mention the impact on individual freedom.
You are correct. Think of the industry behind peanuts. Think of how many hundreds of thousands if not even millions of workers in industries could be affected by what is likely to eventually happen some day. Industries in food service, preparation, restaurants, candy bars, ice cream vending machines, peanut oil, you name it, the list goes on and on.
All it takes is one person on a crusade (and there is no shortage of those people) to get some legislators on board (and there is no shortage of THOSE people either) to legislate peanuts out of existence.
Because the fact is, there are too many people, too many products, and too many environments where even a whiff of peanut in the air is a threat to someone. They will make it a social justice campaign, and you will be vilified if you speak out against it. In the pocket of the peanut industry or whatever. Anyone who thinks it will stop before that is naive in the extreme.
I am simply sick to death of it.
LOL....The carts are all filthy.
The next time you grab a shopping cart I want you to think of this, instead of peanut butter. Do you know for certain that the people who used the cart before you didn’t just have a bowel movement and failed to properly wash their hands.
Far too many men do not wash their hands after urinating, especially if they’re alone in the restroom. I am a germ freak, so I use a paper towel to open the bathroom door when exiting. on those occasions when I can’t, I use the disinfectant I carry on my person.
Don’t worry about what you can see...it’s the invisible that can kill you.
Happy shopping. ;>)
As a child I had rickets and ate peanut butter by the tablespoon full. People today are just icky.
Amen. I sold a condo for that very reason. The people who get on those committees and boards are nit picky leftists.
Was the sandwich made with white bread? If so it is a clear sign that the mother is a racist and is no doubt a member of the KKK. We have got to stop this kind of parenting before that child hangs another child because their sandwich is made on brown bread.
> I cant recall ONE kid having peanut allergies when my siblings and I were in school.
In the late 50s my buddy’s dad owned a peanut farm in Virginia. They convinced his dad that he’d get better crop yield if he used the modified seed from their company.
It was soon after that that peanut allergies started.
Incredible. How did we survive the 1950s, 60s and 70s without helicopter parents haunting our every step?
If you’re gonna leave residue of anything on shopping cart handles(or anywhere) make it bacon grease. Defile some Muslims, do the world some good.
I think many are just fed up with millenial narcissism, and they were mainly blowing off steam about the self-adoring social mediots who called the mother who provided the PB sandwich a "monster." That is so over the top, apparently it caused an "equal but opposite reaction." But when push comes to shove, 90% of freepers are a very caring bunch of people. Post a prayer thread and you will find that to be true.
Here here! Society does NOT have to stop functioning because a minute percentage has weird allergies/aversions to normal everyday things. If your kid is SO allergic to daily life that smelling/touching something yards away hurts it you isolate the kid; you don’t tell normal people they can’t enjoy normal life. I wouldn’t smear peanut butter on your kid, but you damn well can’t tell my kid his eating it at home-or anywhere- has to stop!Play this out and you get a paralyzed, controlled society by allergics-or worse!
I thought peanut butter was one of the major food groups!?
Thank you for that video! Puts it well. He believes were unrecoverable, based on history wow. I feel so often like Im walking among idiots. Feel bad for my children.
Thank You! NOT MY PROBLEM.
Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t give my kid any kind of sandwich to eat while shopping at Target or any store. I don’t want to watch others’ kids eat or inflict mine on them. If she had to give the kid something to keep her quiet, give her something that can’t create a mess or sticky fingers, like a pretzel or cookie.
I used to think peanut allergies were bogus too.
My granddaughter was 3 when she had a series of vaccines. A week later she was watching her mom
make peanut butter cookies. She touched the dough and almost died. She’s six now, I’ve seen her lose ability to breathe and pass out only to revive with eppi pen. Scary stuff.
She’s deathly allergic to all tree nuts too. Pretty sure the vax was the cause.
Oh, I agree, I try to use as few processed foods as possible...& I do a lot of things from scratch, but even seasonings, oil, flour, anything, has to be checked...well at least I do check because I don’t want niece going to ER on my watch...As I said, companies are much better about providing info. Harder with holidays and special occasions than just a simple roast and salad dinner.
Not advocating a ban, I just think people should be aware of the severity of the allergy.
For a family wedding, I had to check with the caterer to make sure no peanuts in any of the foods at rehearsal, reception, morning after breakfast, etc...who would want wedding party members to be whisked off to ER :(
Not sure why an airline would be unprofitable if it does not allow peanut butter...To me, it is not that long a period of time...4 or 5 hours w/o peanut butter, Frankly, I wish like cigarettes, that they would choose not allow cats, dogs, seriously ill people (TB? flu? folks running high fever) or peanut butter to ensure health of others... To me it is just being smart and ensuring a pleasant trip for all on a 4 or 5 hour in an enclosed area sharing same air where passenger cannot leave.
Service animals? “Emotional support animals “ getting way out of control...ducks, peacocks, pigs...again, what is average non-stop flight duration in US?
Just wanted to present view from someone who has had experience with it...Believe me, it is not easy, and not something they ask for.
We can also lump in there autism and ADD, ADHD, AHA, HAHA, and so on.
