The USS Helena (CL 50) is the latest in a string of historic shipwrecks discovered by Paul G. Allens expedition crew aboard the state-of-the-art research vessel Petrel.
The U.S. Navy's storied St. Louis-class light cruiser began her World War II service at Pearl Harbor and took part in three significant battles during the Solomon Islands campaign before being sunk by Japanese torpedoes on July 6, 1943, during the Battle of Kula Gulf. All but 168 of Helenas 900 crew survived the sinking and eventual

Helena had run out of flashless powder and had to resort to smokeless which meant her muzzle flashes gave away her position with every salvo.
Japanese destroyers targeted her with their Long Lance torpedoes.
Only 2500 ft deep as opposed to the others a couple of miles deep.Hope they find Wasp and Hornet next.
This is how I like to think I’d spend my money if I were a billionaire. Well done.
Now, if he would just let me take his Mig-29 for a toot around the sky.............

Restored a German Fw-190 with a genuine rebuilt BMW801 engine.
Nice to be a billionaire with money to burn.
Hillary’s 2016 POTUS campaign?
Paul Allen plays with a whole lot of money.
Paul Allen is doing an amazing work for our WWII heroes.
He can find plenty of sunk warships looking up and down Iron Bottom Sound.
Me too! If you are ever in the Seattle area, I highly recommend Allen's "Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Collection.
He calls it a collection, not a museum. All the aircraft and tanks have combat experience and are fully functional. The planes all fly regularly and the tanks charge around the tarmac of Paine Field. Truly big boy's toys!

My primary thought while watching that cool video was of Hitler wishing he had that much fuel to waste just checking out the engine and flying around for fun.
I wish Paul Allen would search for the missing SS Poet, a steamship which left Philadelphia loaded with corn for Egypt. She disappeared during a storm 500 miles or so off the coast of Cape Henlopen, DE. in 1980. 33 merchant mariners were lost. I’m sure the families of those missing would appreciate it.
Got to admit, he is spending it well for fun and interesting things, not for a pack of socialist bullshiite like Gates.
Maybe he is just getting warmed up on how to do this sort of thing. Been pretty damn good at it so far.
Ain't no one else doing it...........
No criticism only a comment of fact. I believe he found the Juneau.
Yes, Juneau, Lexington, Hiei, and several others in the past few years.
He found my Father-in-laws brother’s ship in iron bottom sound - the USS Barton (DD-599) sunk 12 November 1942.
