On Wednesday, 28 March, 2018, the West Maypole Avenue Church of Christ was having a Bible study that started at 7:30 p.m. At 8:09 p.m., the study was interrupted by 27-year-old Kenneth Baines, who announced an armed robbery. A 57-year-old armed church member was seated inside. The church member was legally armed and had a concealed carry permit.
It seems likely that he was a member of a voluntary church security team, as later reports refer to him as a security guard, but no report mentions that he had a security guard license, or that he was paid as a security guard. From suntimes.com on 29 March, 2018:
A 57-year-old man was sitting in a the church at 8:09 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Maypole when a 27-year-old man walked in and announced a robbery, according to Chicago Police.
Maypole Avenue Church of Christ is located at 4400 W. Maypole.
The two men then started shooting at each other, police said. The older man was struck in the left arm and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. The robber was shot multiple times in the chest and was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.
The 57-year-old legally owned his gun, police said.
From the Maypole Ave Church of Christ Facebook page:
We solemnly pray for our brother in Christ and the perpetrator of this heinous deed.
To be a paid and armed security guard in Chicago, a special permit is required,

Preacher says Not to bring guns to church. Little old lady next to me says he can kiss my rosary I’ll keep mine thanks. Ever enjoy a place where every body may be carrying but you don t know who?
Thanks, I tried to be firm but gentle.
Good guy with a gun, stops bad guy with a gun..........again!!! And we want to take away guns from good guys? How about we start with BAD guys first.
Never on Sunday ...
I know we have gun carriers in my church.... :-))
AND we have a plan.
The robber was shot multiple times in the chest
Nice shooting there Tex.
Get well soon.

Nice shooting for mass by the defender, but the fact the robber didn’t die suggests the defender may wish to consider carrying a more lethal side arm.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition.
Sounds like the protector was great under pressure of fire and had trained well with his firearm. Not so with the perp.
God protects all who protect themselves.
I love that!
Oh, puleeeease!
So he is a security guard, whether he had a license or got paid, he did in fact provide security.
But because he was not an officially credentialed security guard, he only unofficially stopped the attacker... who is unofficially in the hospital. And the congregation was unofficially protected.
"It's good to be credentialed."
A man who was only taking money from a wealthier church to give to poorer church folk, a Godly Robin of da Hood...
Well of course. That way some government can decide who's worthy, and levy a tax.
Gotta keep the peasants under control don't you know.
The / s was implied :)
Yeah, but the older you get, the harder it is to remember things, right?
Ah, the photo of a Chicago PD cruiser.
Did Mayor Rahm rush to the scene to comfort the church members.
The only thing I worry about if this happens in my church is the cross fire....
Nice shooting, but the parishioner needs a change in caliber or bullet type, maybe a hydra shok.
And existing media can decide who is/isn't an "officially credentialed journalist." Control the credentialing, and you control it all.
"Dear congregation,
Brother Stalwart has not completed the mandated state and local firearms training, so he will be unable to protect us.
In the meantime, the city has generously offered to have the newest member of their vibrant and diverse police force - Officer Moe Akbar - drive past our building during services to make certain you are safe. Officer Ackbar is fully credentialed by the state and city."
The implicit bias in the article is probably purely reflexive at this point. The make a point of telling us that the church guy was a legal owner, as if we should care, but do not give us the same information about the guy who initiated multiple illegal actions.
