The United States could have Nordic-style welfare programs, too
Washington Compost ^ | March 29 | Elizabeth Bruenig

Posted on 04/06/2018 10:57:28 AM PDT by Dahoser

Left-leaning Americans should be thrilled that a new subgenre of political commentary has emerged aimed at explaining why the United States simply can’t brook Nordic-style welfare programs. It’s a theme that wouldn’t prompt expounding unless interest in such programs appeared to be rising, and it is. Yet the reasons adduced to argue that the United States has no hope of establishing programs like the ones enjoyed by Europe’s social democracies are more disturbing than commonly credited. .
.
.
On the above view, the United States was always doomed to merely marginal achievements where justice, equality and freedom are concerned. This is where the thinking of romantic nationalists dovetails with today’s Scandi-skeptics: If the United States has a poverty rate about triple that of Denmark, or a child poverty rate about eight times higher, or millions more lacking access to health insurance, each camp would propose, it’s at least partially due to the kind of country we are. We can tinker with policies around the edges, tweak here and there — but we’ll always be fundamentally limited by our own doomed nature. Only the self-consciously homogenous can have really nice things.

And yet, we do, somehow, manage to have some nice things: Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, universal public schools.

A few too many Tide Pods munchouts and snorted condoms would be my guess for Elizabeth Bruenig's impaired reasoning faculties.

The upshot is that support for such programs IS rising.

Because Millenials look at those programs in Europe and say “uhhh.....yeah, that sounds cool!” without investing any rational thought or analysis into it.

Being force fed the Scandinavian model of socialism is precisely why Europe is heading towards oblivion fast.

Yeah, that’s what I want. Double my taxes so the 50% that don’t pay taxes can move into my neighborhood.

I couldn’t ever support a split, but you can’t help but see the benefits that would be involved for everyone if the US were to partition — conservatives get the western half and a swathe running down to Florida, liberals get the northeast to the great lakes and the down to the mid-Atlantic.

Yes, all we need to get started is a Nordic-style population. The Democrats need to get on that. :)

Scandinavia are small countries with around 20 million people.

The culture too is different - people take care of each other and expect the government to take care of them.

There is a high degree of public trust in government that doesn’t exist here.

Third Way social democracy isn’t a good fit for America.

She left out the biggest reason. Our maintaining a military second to none that in large part benefits the Northern European communes. We are extending national security welfare to these nations and have for quite some time; they use the subsidized national security to have cradle to grave welfare...

WARNING! Severe dain bramage alert! 🚨 🚨

I doubt she's used any of these things except, maybe, public schools...and that alone would account for her inability to think critically. What a dolt.

The "Noridic-style" welfare system used to work because of the homogeneous demographics and culture of the Scandinavian countries. Everybody in the boat was rowing, and an innate prudence and self control helped assure the system was sustainable.

But most countries are not so blessed. Most countries have a rather large parasitic underclass of rabble and genetically challenged lay-abouts. This perpetual tumor on society can not be cured, will never be cured. It can only be managed.

Visit an emergency room and notice the demographic makeup of the "clients". When free stuff is available, certain groups of people can't control themselves and consume as much of a scarce resource as possible, their countrymen be damned.

Don’t count on these “nice” things being around when you’re old enough to be eligible for them.

Like the Iron Lady said, more or less, “It’s all good until you run out of other people’s money.”

They tried to create a middle path between unfettered capitalism and communist totalitarianism.

The ideal is to give people security without taking away their freedom. Its a tough balancing act.

I’m not sure we could improve on it.

She seems to have omitted the fact that their Muslim and other “Migrant” Populations now consume 50% of their Social Welfare Programs.

All of which, to a strict constructionist, are unconstitutional.
