....Teenage survivors of the Parkland shooting helped organize the nationwide marches, which came the same week Congress voted to lift a restriction on federal research into gun violence — a rule that's been in effect for about 22 years. It remains to be seen if lawmakers will fund such research by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after President Donald Trump signed a bill containing the measure into law. Below is some of the core data we do have on gun violence in the US (highlighted in red; suicides and accidents excluded), and how it compares to other causes of death for Americans:

I don't know how to pull the charts, but a quick summation: death by drugs 1 in 72 death by poisoning including OD 1 in 86 suicide 1 in 92 any motor vehicle accident 1 in 108 alcohol 1 in 123 murder 1 in 229 assault with a firearm 1 in 315

down in the bottom chart it equates firearm deaths as equal to chances of drowning, which isn't mentioned in the top chart

Here ya go:

He is the perfect poster child for a want to be dictator and another good reason to have a gun, only to re-enforce the second amendment.

The whole firearms debate s NOT about firearms. Not at all. It’s about Lefties having a maniacal inner compulsion to sway policy and scr*w conservatives - who remain the most prolific firearms owners and enthusiasts.

The whole firearms debate s NOT about firearms.

Alinsky said, "The issue is never the issue".

Everything the Left does is Camouflaged, Covered, and Concealed.

Everything they say is a lie. Always.

"Once one leg of the stool is missing you are required to stop."

Except possibly for "Opportunity. (Attacker is in your space. Within 21 feet." Example: there's no cover for a mile radius, and someone is firing at you from 600 yards. Another example: the aggressor has already tried to attack and is running towards the only cover in sight.

"If you have to defend yourself. You are going to jail."

There have been many cases where police didn't book people who killed in self-defense. It depends on local policy and other elements of a situation. A jurisdiction that has a suspiciously high rate of bonds might be monitored.

As for bonds in general, growing insurance companies will probably lobby away jail for many before long. Police and prosecutors might get some new continuing professional information for discretion in some cases. Bonds are sometimes expensive and unnecessary.

Reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield joke from the other thread.

“Boy does my wife scream during sex. I walked in on her the other day - you shoulda’ heard her!”

Interestingly, the state of Washington is fairly conservative when it comes to using a weapon to defend oneself or one’s property. (Or someone else’s property for that matter.)

A few years ago there was some maniac with a knife attacking people in the nice downtown mall area of Seattle. A guy that was knocked down shot and killed him. Enough witnesses around and the guy was questioned and let go along with a big thank you I imagine.

I’m guessing that with enough witnesses telling the same story they will let the one defending themselves go. There was a young motorcyle gal that was attacked by an older guy on a highway south of Seattle. He started the attack, she tried to fight him off but he kept beating her, so she pulled her gun and shot him dead with him on top of her. But - lots of witnesses around due to the stuck traffic.

Based on that chart, it looks like we need to march on Washington for fall prevention more than we do gun violence!

We had a minor blizzard and were driving in the terrible conditions in the midst of it and I watched a guy driving on the deathly slick road whilst texting on his stupid phone, not even looking at the road.

*They* are who I fear.

"countries with more guns see more gun deaths, and states with tighter gun control laws see fewer gun-related deaths."

Wrong! You don't need guns to have a high homicide rate!!!

I’ve been acquainted with more than one. There was one who lived in a shack in a strange little town full of shacks in Colorado. He looked rather scruffy but was clean. We’ll call him “Scruffy.” Seemed to have a sociable disposition.

Another man had an aggressive disagreement with Scruffy. The other man went to Scruffy’s house later and walked in the doorway with a weapon in his hand. Scruffy shot him.

There wasn’t much that needed saying. There was what you just read, and Scruffy feared for his life. Bad day for Scruffy. That was about it. But the laws there and county policy fit the situation. There are many other jurisdictions and legal situations where jail for a night would be safer.

That is, if no third party associated with the dead attacker attacked the defender’s family while he was in jail. Then things could get rather complicated again.

People here should remember that gun control is almost always brought out as a means of attempting to divert public attention away from more serious issues challenging the political elite.

Last month’s tragedy and now the current push for more gun control involves the DNC wanting to divert attention away from their serious financial difficulties and divisions within their own party, plus potentially very damaging fallout related to scandals involving Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and even Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Adam Lanza’s bloody rampage in December 2012 in Sandy Hook, CT involved Obama wanting to divert public attention away from continued perceived economic malaise and also again potentially very politically damaging fallout from the Benghazi massacre in September of that year (that ultimately helped to cost then Secretary of State Clinton her chance at the White House in 2016).

1999-2000-Columbine High School-Eric Harris’ and Dylan Klebold’s shooting spree in Littleton, CO was used by the Clintons as payback over the Monica Lewinsky affair and impeachment and also to soften Hillary Clinton’s public image in her campaign for the Senate seat in New York. The push for gun control then helped to cost Al Gore the White House and the Democrats the House in the 2000 election.
