Earth Hour: Turn off your lights Saturday, save the world

Worldwide campaign to protect planet celebrates 11 years

By Mary Claire Patton - Digital Content Curator Posted: 11:40 AM, March 23, 2018 Updated: 11:40 AM, March 23, 2018

AN ANTONIO - Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement and shines light on the need for climate action.

Every year since it’s induction, people around the globe commit to turning off the lights for one hour.

Earth hour is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. local time in whatever area of the planet you live in.

This year Earth Hour celebrates 11 years of saving energy and raising awareness on the impact of climate change.

Iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Space Needle, Las Vegas strip, Eiffel Tower and Big Ben all go dark for one hour in honor of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour supporters have successfully advocated for more climate-friendly laws and policies, such as those that have banned plastic in the World Heritage site of the Galapagos Islands, according to the website.

There are more ways to raise awareness and participate in Earth Hour than just turning the lights off.

I know that, but was trying for a simple explanation.

Thanks for expanding on my point as it remains the same. Turning off lights may save on your bill but the energy not used (as the power generating plant adjust to lower loads) will be used when everyone turns their lights back on an hour later.

I turned on every electrical appliance and light in my house including the shitty little lamp in the sump pump closet.

Feels good. Real good.

Thanks to LED’s, I can turn on every light in my house and use less energy than a single 100 watt bulb.

So I’m good, regardless. :)

You must not have been around here then. Every year Freepers announce their plans to turn on their lights. I think I'll turn on my air conditioner and furnace to let them fight for an hour. Maybe I'll crank up the Star Trek fight music for added tension.

I’ll turn my lights and stuff off. I’ll even turn my coal stove off for a bit.

I’ll load the family into the Suburban and take a ride for an hour. The greenies will WISH I stayed home then.

Then I’ll come back home and light up a coal starter mouse and watch $3 worth of magnesium, sulfur, and carbon flare up releasing so much energy that stagnant coal can be ignited.

That one action there will undo everything that an hour with the lights on will do.

Sounds like a fine time to turn 'em all on and leave 'em on all night.

Btw:

I think I’ll run the electric leaf blower all day and the 1960’s era Waring blender all evening, the one that shoots sparks out the bottom and makes the place smell like ozone. Have a groovy drunken smoothie party with some friends and crank up the tunes.

You can buy bagged ice at Sonic (those little ice nuggets) that works great in that blender (I have one, too). Margaritaville awaits.

Yep. Always use diesel. Not quite so volatile as the non ethanol premium that I keep on hand for the ATV and other small engine devices. Less likely to singe your eyebrows when you touch it off.

“I’ll load the family into the Suburban and take a ride for an hour.”

Thanks for the suggestion! I live on a farm with a long long long driveway and I have a ‘99 Suburban. It gets about .13 MPG. I’ll drive it up and down the driveway for an hour...up and down...up and down...up and down. I’ll take the hubby along and it will be Date Night!

An excellent plan !

Since it's only ~40° here today, an unnecessary trip to town with the truck windows cranked down and the heater blastin' seems fitting.

That’s the spirit. Turning off lights does not save the planet. If it does anything it symbolizes the appalling ignorance of the environmental movement. Reducing electric usage increases bonfires, candles and cave dwelling. This does nothing to save the planet.
Even a modicum of research into the natural system on planet earth reveals the importance of every aspect being in flux. The more we use the resources around us the more the system of life on earth flourishes. It really is that simple.
Hysterics about extinction are meaningless. We protect that which we care to have survive. The other 99.9% of creatures that have ever existed no longer do. They have been replaced with a plethora of species that have learned to live in a changing environment.
To support the earth burn every light in your house. Show your love for nature by celebrating its wonders, up to and including the harnessing of electricity.

Oh man, that's half the fun .. cuz who really needs eyebrows anyway ?  see!>  ;-)

Wish it wasn't windy today cuz the burn pile out back would make a nice cheery FU to any greenies driving by.
