Earth Hour: Turn off your lights Saturday, save the world

Worldwide campaign to protect planet celebrates 11 years

By Mary Claire Patton - Digital Content Curator Posted: 11:40 AM, March 23, 2018 Updated: 11:40 AM, March 23, 2018

AN ANTONIO - Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement and shines light on the need for climate action.

Every year since it’s induction, people around the globe commit to turning off the lights for one hour.

Earth hour is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. local time in whatever area of the planet you live in.

This year Earth Hour celebrates 11 years of saving energy and raising awareness on the impact of climate change.

Iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Space Needle, Las Vegas strip, Eiffel Tower and Big Ben all go dark for one hour in honor of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour supporters have successfully advocated for more climate-friendly laws and policies, such as those that have banned plastic in the World Heritage site of the Galapagos Islands, according to the website.

There are more ways to raise awareness and participate in Earth Hour than just turning the lights off.

Run the oil through some cheesecloth and added to your oil tank(if you heat with oil) when a delivery is coming to thin it out.

Antifreeze just flows down the street and I hit it with a hose to dilute it so as not to injure pets.

Stop with the logic! I always laugh when I think about when I lived in Albuquerque. There city mandated water restrictions. Massive eater restrictions. Everyone was shocked when water prices tripled. This because the bonds for water infrastructure still had to be serviced at lower consumption rates. Lol. Same story with electricity infrastructure.

“But turning off a light is not saving energy. Electricity once created is either used or lost (with few exceptions)”

I’ll turn off my TV for an hour when NBC, CBS and ABC News are on.

I think I’ll run the electric leaf blower all day and the 1960’s era Waring blender all evening, the one that shoots sparks out the bottom and makes the place smell like ozone. Have a groovy drunken smoothie party with some friends and crank up the tunes.

Turning off the power plants for an hour might save the energy it takes to run the power plant, and turning off a light might save on your electric bill. But turning off a light is not saving energy. Electricity once created is either used or lost

Not quite true. Unused electrical power isn't dumped as there is no real way to dump it. It simply isn't generated. The power of gas or steam turbines is regulated to match the electrical demand on the grid. Minor fluctuations are covered by storing or removing kinetic energy in the turbines and generators for the short time it takes to adjust throttles to loads.

The real problem is that a generating system on line but with little load has a lot of recirculating power that is used to run the generating system (pumps mostly). The energy cost to run a generator with little load is where the waste comes in. Therefore a 1hr cutback in power demand is a wasted gesture.

Ah, to live life as a blissful simpleton in the liberal bubble where everything is easy and convenience and comfort is guaranteed to all, forever.

Symbolic stupidity. Electricity is essential to modern life. Power plants must plan and build to meet peak demand. This does nothing to reduce peak demand. It is nothing but a feel-good liberal fantasy designed to make people feel guilty over electricity, and to prepare them for leftist restrictions on power usage.
