Trump signs $1.3 trillion budget after ‘reality show’ drama

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump grudgingly signed a $1.3 trillion federal spending measure Friday and averted a midnight government shutdown — but only after undercutting his own negotiators and setting off a mini-panic with a last-minute veto threat. The episode further eroded the already damaged credibility of both the president and a White House staff that had assured the nation he was onboard.

Trump said he was “very disappointed” in the package, in part because it did not fully pay for his planned border wall with Mexico and did not extend protection from deportation to some 700,000 “Dreamer” immigrants due to lose coverage under a program the president himself has moved to eliminate.

But Trump praised the bill’s provisions to increase military spending and said he had “no choice but to fund our military.”

“My highest duty is to keep America safe,” he said.

“A great day for Planned Parenthood. And I’m called a traitor for bringing that up.”

Or a coward for wanting to hold POTUS accountable for keeping government spending under control. Some around here are no better than those on the other side if you dare disagree with their rosy assessment of events today.

The first duty of the president is to defend us from foreign enemies. This is the military Trump inherited...

Army: Of 58 total brigade combat teams (the Army’s main combat building block), only three are considered ready for combat.

•Navy: The Navy’s fleet is the smallest it has been in nearly 100 years. This makes ship repairs harder to complete, as those vessels are needed on the waterways.

•Marine Corps: Eighty percent of Marine aviation units do not have even the minimum number of aircraft they need for training and basic operations.

•Air Force: The Air Force is the smallest and, in terms of many of its aircraft, oldest it has ever been. The service had 8,600 aircraft in 1991 while today it only has 5,500, and those aircraft are an average of 27 years old. Worse, fewer than half of those aircraft are prepared to take on and defeat our adversaries.

https://www.dailysignal.com/2017/02/10/defense-leaders-agree-us-military-readiness-is-at-a-dangerous-low/

When Mattis told him without this money he can’t defend us, he had little choice but to swallow the rest of the crap to get money to rebuild the military. It’s easy to criticize when it’s not your responsibility.

I too am a traitor then. Even Chris Smith of NJ, who was a pro-life LEADER before his first NJ election, voted to send $500B to PP. He has become one more sick pol.

Post of the Day.

Couple that with Trump’s recent significant changes with Pompeo as SoS and Bolton as National Security Advisor. He’s been paying attention to his PDBs and knows we have to be ready to combat against looming existential threats-most probably alone.

Reminds me of pre-WW2 circa 1938. Something large is looming and we aren’t ready for it militarily.

Budgets aren't expenditures. I am hoping that, as the economy improves with the tax cuts, more people will be employed lightening the load on Federal social welfare services like Food stamps. That means the Rat programs which were approved in this absurd bloated budget won't be as needed, and possibly the domestic spending level (as opposed to budgeted amount) will actually be lower.

I am also hoping part of the Defense budget can be allocated for the Wall (to mitgate terrorist threat, entry) - much like we build military bases and port facilities on US soil to support national defense services.

As our chief Executive, it still puzzles me President Trump does not naturally have the full authority to simply enforce existing immigration law with any and all actions needed - including building the wall on his own executive decision. Why does he keep asking/waiting on the Clowngress? Doesn't seem he needs to do that - it makes no sense to me. What is he waiting for???

I am still with Trump, but honestly I am running out of patience..... it's a deal breaker if border Wall construction is not begun in earnest - within 6 months.

DEAR PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU BLEW IT! You only have to look at the grins on Schumer’s and Pelosi’s (gee, we get more done as a minority!) faces to see that you got rolled. DONT EVER LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN, or you will lose the majority of your support!

>>>Donald “Judas” Trump<<<

POTUS Trump Vetoes the Bill (that already had enough Votes in Both Houses to Override his Veto).

Tomorrows Headline, Trump Vetoes Military Pay Raises, with a story about a Military Family on Public Assistance in Trumps’ America, while he also wants to cut Public Assistance so he can spend the Money on Golf at his Estate in Florida and paying to shut up Stormy Daniels.

That would only be the first of many shots at the POTUS. The GOP Congress created a no win situation.

Just to be clear, I hate the Bill as Passed, but here we are.

I remember feeling this way when Obamacare was shoved down our throats and later when Roberts said forcing citizens to buy a government service was a tax.

I see something looming I was hoping would not be necessary.

Ruh-roh. I just realized that the Uniparty got enough Pubbies and Dems to override a veto anyway........excuse my doofusness. Trump wasn’t rolled by the Dems......he was rolled by the Uniparty. Time to get the Conservative Party up and running. Maybe we do need a three-party system.........The Conservative Party, the Moderate Party and the Loony Party.

I see; so we need more military funding to support useless ventures in places like Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. That’s what “conservatives” GOT out of this stupid legislation in return for funding Planned Parenthood, no border controls, oceans of money for foreign nonprofit outfits? No, we got NOTHING, only the neocons won out with funding for their stupid, useless wars fought by others sons.

"Given the current geopolitical situation, and the poor state of readiness in the military, I think might have felt he had to go along to get the military spending increases he needed. Recall that the military got sucked into the sequester situation and never recovered."

I get your point, but still trying to understand the immediacy to pass and sign this monstrous bill that no one Congress-critter had time to read and debate. Seems we are relying on their staff/lawyers to write our laws.

Does no one recall Pelosi's middle-night passage of Obamacare that took over a 6th of our economy? Is it just me that remembers her fateful words, "We have to pass it, to see what's in it"?

President Trump did the same thing with this 2000 plus page bill. He, McConnell, Ryan could have insisted on more time for their staff to read the bill. But no, they had to go on Easter break.

Potus, alone, could have insisted study time on such a complicated bill. I think he has 2 weeks before it becomes law without his signature. He could have then lined out the parts he thought wrong with MAGA, with a threat of a Veto and sent it back to the House.

So the Fedgov shuts down for a short time. Again, so what?

Is there a war coming? That's the only reason I can see why he signed this atrocious legislation.

Larry Elder was talking, Trump campaigned as a populist, he didn’t campaign as a fiscal conservative. People get what they vote for. About 40% or even about half of eligible voters don’t vote, didn’t even vote for the President. So, this is how things happen. I love about everything else about this presidency though.

He didn’t campaign as a fiscal conservative, yes, this bill sucks. If people had wanted fiscal conservatism, they needed to elect Paul or one of the others, Cruz. This was whom the party nominated, I voted for him, it’s been one of the best presidencies of my life and I’m no spring chicken.
