The union is voluntary. Government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed.

Sing it!

California has a diverse and robust economy. They will be fine as a country. There may some good reasons to oppose this but the economy IS NOT one of them.

“We, the delegates of the people of Virginia, duly elected in pursuance of a recommendation from the general assembly, and now met in convention, having fully and freely investigated and discussed the proceedings of the Federal Convention, and being prepared as well as the most mature deliberation hath enabled us to decide thereon, Do, in the name and in behalf of the people of Virginia, declare and make known that the powers granted under the Constitution being derived from the people of the United States may be resumed by them whensoever the same shall be perverted to their injury or oppression, and that every power not granted thereby remains with them and at their will....”

“We, the delegates of the people of New York... do declare and make known that the powers of government may be reassumed by the people whenever it shall become necessary to their happiness; that every power, jurisdiction, and right which is not by the said Constitution clearly delegated to the Congress of the United States, or the department of the government thereof, remains to the people of the several States, or to their respective State governments, to whom they may have granted the same; and that those clauses in the said Constitution, which declare that Congress shall not have or exercise certain powers, do not imply that Congress is entitled to any powers not given by the said Constitution; but such clauses are to be construed either as exceptions in certain specified powers or as inserted merely for greater caution.”

“We, the delegates of the people of Rhode Island and Plantations, duly elected... do declare and make known... that the powers of government may be resumed by the people whenever it shall become necessary to their happiness; that every power, jurisdiction, and right which is not by the said Constitution clearly delegated to the Congress of the United States, or the department of the government thereof, remains to the people of the several States, or to their respective State governments, to whom they may have granted the same; that Congress shall guarantee to each State its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Constitution expressly delegated to the United States.”

“...we don’t want liberals or faux conservatives in Arizona.”

Yeah...you can keep your own “Flakes” AND “McCains” at home while you’re at denigrating others.

Good thing you have a Conservative (Californian) website, Free Republic, to rant on! Our California Rep. Devine Nunez... does he meet your approval? How about 2 time Governor Ronnie Reagan?

In other words “Stuff it.”

“..Send in the National Guard. President Trump:....”

The Guard is controlled by the Governor...in this case Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown. For Trump to command the California National Guard he would first have to “federalize” it, essentially joining it with the US Army.

Works for me.
We are under hostile occupation here. What would Truman have done if the Germans had taken Virginia? It’s a damned invasion, help throw out the invaders or stop pretending that we have anything approaching national sovereignty; at least Mexico knows how to deal with illegal immigrants.

You like to eat, right?

And having a roof over your head is lovely, isn’t it?

We’re stuck here for a few more years.

Too old for rehire and too young to retire.

I have my deuce gear stashed by the exit door. Never know when you’ll need it. I’ll be heading to the “new” state of Jefferson!

a friends daughter lives in the SF Bay area. A X-mass all she could talk about was how the libs were gonna start a Civil War. They’re kids (late 20’s), but who knows? Liberalism IS a Mental disease......just walk around the Bay and anyone can see!

Those signing statements were meant to make people feel better about the gigantic leap they were about to make. They hold no force of law.

They show the intent of the parties to the constitution - the states. Nobody at the time claimed a state did not have a right of unilateral secession. The 9th and 10th amendments make it impossible to argue such a right would have had to be listed or that any powers not specifically listed belonged to the federal government rather than to the states.

The union is voluntary. States have the right to unilaterally secede. The federal govt will use force to prevent it but that is a position of “might makes right” - not one based on the original intent of the Founders.

Go on believing that fairytale if it makes you feel better. Just don’t act surprised when people look at you funny and say, “Say what?!”

It’s reality. I’ve provided the resolutions the states passed when they ratified the US Constitution showing it to be the case. You’ve provided no evidence to refute it.

The evidence is really self-evident - if these signing statements had any force of law they would have availed themselves of it. None of the rebelling states pointed to these statements and declared this so-called right. None.

And that is because even the slavers knew that there is no “right of secession” - especially not a unilateral right. The only way out of the union is through mutual accord of ALL the states or by revolution and the force of arms.

False. They asserted their right to secede under the 9th and 10th amendments. Since nowhere in the constitution is it forbidden and since the argument cannot be made that the bill of rights already contains all rights the states have, the states clearly do have the right to unilaterally secede. The express reservations of multiple states are prima facia evidence of the original intent of the ratifying bodies of sovereign states.

False.

There's nothing false in what I said.

They asserted their right to secede under the 9th and 10th amendments.

How stupid was that?! I mean, who would be foolish enough to stand up and say (straight-faced of course) "I assert my right that is undefined anywhere but my own brain!"

The fact is that some (few) claimed this loophole but, unlike the bozos who claim that you don't have to file federal income taxes, few actually put it to the test.

The southern slavers were indeed just that foolish. As a consequence they lost a shite-load of citizens, and a huge fortune. As a direct consequence there is now a SCOTUS ruling that prohibits secession unless through mutual accord.

Conservatives should beg California to secede. We should make it easy for them. We should help pay for it. Pass the hat. Every conservative should chip in $20. I’ll throw $1000 to get the ball rolling.

Sure, break up the country over nothing.

Just think of elections. Without California, Trump and all future Republican presidential candidates would win, without breaking a sweat. Without California, we’d easily win the popular vote. And we'd win the electoral vote by a landslide.

No. It means the Democrats move right. That might be a good thing in itself.

But without California taking the Democrats left, they'd be more competitive with the GOP, and be back in office soon enough.

Maybe the reason Wayne never saw 0bama in college is that he didn't go to class either.
