Basketball Great Compares College Hoops to Slavery; ‘Journalist’ Agrees

“They [the NCAA] just got a contract from CBS (and TNT), $8.8 billion, and if you are making that, I think you have to share some revenue. You can’t expect people to continue to work for nothing on a false hope of, well this is about education, we are getting you an education, we will feed you. It sounds a little like 400 years ago, like slavery. Stay in your hut. Stay in that little house. We’ll give you some food. You do all of the work. All of it. And I am telling you that I will take care of you."

LOL! When I first read the part I posted I thought it was the democratic play book. Fifty + years of un-kept promises with promises of more. Un-kept of course. But, trust us while we look out for your best interests.

Why is it, that college football and basketball have evolved into being farm teams for the pros? Why is it that college baseball doesn’t function that way for the most part? Why is it that baseball runs their own minor league system, rather than depending on colleges to develop players?

Colleges give blacks free tuition if they can spell basketball, and know how throw a ball into a basket. So STFU.

The slavery comparison is idiotic, but it is a stupid system that creates household names out of some college athletes and doesn’t provide them with enough money to go to a restaurant or buy a bike.

Not as if a lot of those players are going to graduate anyway, so what’s the point of offering them a scholarship?

I agree that college athletes, especially football and basketball, are being used to generate billions for well connected, and I hate to say it "white guys", and are not being compensated.

It's a damn travesty and something should be done.

and are not being compensated.

Horsefeathers. They are getting a free-ride academically. I sure would have loved for my kids to get a free ride, would have saved me about a hundred thousand dollars in tuition.

Now, the fact they don't take advantage of it, is a whole other discussion.

Professional hockey also functions like baseball. Some players are drafted from college, but many more are brought up through the “farm” teams of the NHL.

No, no. It isn’t. Let us use their metaphor.

Let us end college basketball entirely.

You don’t pay slaves. You free them. End slavery, end college basketball and shut it all down.

Because professional baseball predates intercollegiate sports and the others do not?

It’s time to start to listen to this constant litany of “X is just like slavery”.

On the one hand, no, starting for Duke as an apprenticeship to pro ball (I agree the “education” is worthless) is NOT like slavery.

But I believe for many American blacks, performing a service, ANY service, however well compensated for “the man” IS exactly “like slavery”, and once understood this way, it’s one more piece of evidence that people who feel this way can’t coexist with people who don’t.

OK, let me get this straight. If you are blessed with a degree of physical ability, skilled at basketball, have a good work ethic and are offered the opportunity to obtain an education in exchange for playing a game which you most likely love, it is akin to slavery? (Nice run-on sentence, eh?) What universe does THAT come from?

Oh, right...the Democrat playbook.

I strongly disagree!

I don't think some of them can spell basketball.

This article is exactly right, these people are getting screwed.

We must immediately defund all college basketball programs, fire everyone that has ever touched a basketball, investigate everyone and return the savings to the tax payer.
