In the current day, I don't know if there are a sufficient number of troops loyal to the President, to successfully carry out the type of purge you've described.
In a country of this size, with 350 million inhabitants, he'd have to invoke the 2nd Amendment, and call up the militia to 'drain the swamp' outside of DC.
The prospects of such a scenario are frightening from every angle, but events in this country appear to be barreling towards something that looks just like that.
What if the plotters succeed in overthrowing our duly elected president? The ball will then be in our court. Heaven help us all.
