Why are there so few right-leaning artists?

Because if you do not have the correct political views you are not going to break into their little cabal.

You will be blacklisted.

I’m an artist that leans to the right. Can’t wrap my mind around “left think”. Although I do try to make both sides of my brain function.

Never went to school for it, just born to it. And never could stand working in groups. Prefer doing my art with no humans around, just lots of animals.

And I sell on-line via POD, so they deal with all the business end.

I know several “artists” forums, and yes, it does seem the majority of them lean left. Needless to say, I don’t fit in, so I stay away and leave them to their whatevers :)

Yes, I think that child-like state for creativity becomes child-like thinking in the real world.

Define Art...

I bet more than 1/2 the custom auto painters, pin strippers, auto restorers, hot rod builders, homebuilt aircraft guys ( I know for a fact they are ) and aircraft restorers, especially the War-Bird guys are all fellow right wing lunatics pun intended ;-).

That to me is art, not some guy with a jar back in the late 80's and I will not say anymore to give him any credence....

I guess I’m an artist, although I wear many hats when it comes to work. I’ve sold many paintings. But I’m a right winger. It comes from my Western world view. My paintings reflect my world view.

A lot of artists are new agers. They feed off one another. I keep my personal interaction with the local art scene at a minimum.

I think mainly, art classes are taught by radicals and new agers.

Exactly. If you want to see success, you MUST do what the ‘cool’ kids say..

I just read the available excerpts there, but the book seems to be saying something somewhat different: that in the US the wealthy hobnob amongst themselves and avoid leaders in intellectual and artistic fields. This he says leads to a return resentment among those so spurned.

Now, accepting his premise that the artists and intellectuals are valued by and commingled with the wealthy in Europe, which presumably would make them feel accepted rather than spurned, he doesn’t begin to explain why the artists and intellectuals in Europe are if anything more extremely leftist than those over here.

conservatives generally don’t read fiction, they read non-fiction.

Maybe that's because liberal editors at publishing houses don't buy the stuff that would appeal to conservatives.

I know a few.

The truth is this: their bosses rewrite them to say these things. If they don’t, they don’t work anymore.

The question is BS.

Any Rand’s “The Fountainhead” speaks to the truth of what’s excepted as art or not.

Conservatives do tend to be realists but does not prevent them from writing good fiction, being good painters etc

A close friend was president of the Writers Guild in LA and had to hide the fact that he was Conservative even in the writing he did.

But I think it’s fair to ask ...... Why are Liberals more perverted and lazier than Conservatives ?

My daughter is a conservative artist. She has held her tongue in many enviornments over the past several years.

The process of someone becoming a “real” professional artist (not your Sunday painter) is brutal compared to my life in a traditional business world. College for them is not a cakewalk.

It was more difficult for someone wanting to be an “artist” to get into a top level design or art school. I stood in line with my daughter while waiting for her “portfolio” review. There were probably 20 aspiring art majors in front of us. More than half of them came out of their reviews crying.

It was her first experience with peer review. And it was brutal. They liked her stuff..so she finally got into her top choice.

The entire first year she did NONE of her major art type. They teach you the fundamentals of what makes art good. Again, peer reviews are absolutely brutal. How any of these kids got out of there with friends is beyond me.

I went to a military college. The whole thing was about team work and leadership. Art School was the complete opposite. It was all individual work and it was ultra competitive.

Finally, she graduates with an BFA. She would be qualified to teach with an extra semester of school. Which is one of the directions about half of her classmates went.

She has chosen to live through workshops, grants, and scholarships to 6 month courses and residencies. These are “opportunities” where you work for someone and provide them labor and they provide you access to studio space and instructors (and sometimes instruct yourself.)

So, you come through this whole thing and you look at the world differently than those coming out of a more traditional engineering or general business environment.

They live as poor people. They live on the generosity of those with disposable income. Most of the time I sense that her peers are pissed off because they worked harder than MOST of their high school peers.

Artists live at the discretion of studio owners or gallery buyers. And THAT is a jungle in and of itself. If you are not the right “image” of an artist, the buyers are not going to give you the time of day. And you will end up at Craft shows every weekend, making $300 net per show.

A true artist is steeped in the righteousness of poverty. They are treated unjustly—a lot of the time. Their success is not based on work ethic or quality. Its based on the whim of people with disposable income. Working harder for an artist does NOT equate to more income.

If you are wondering WHY artists are lefties, this is the reason.

As a conservative with pretty strong opinions...it is not a good life these days. Speaking your mind to the wrong people will mean that no one will buy your work.

And yes...99% of the people going into Art school have heard all of the comments about ending up doing something else. They know the chances of making it that community are almost zero.

And in the four years since she graduated, she has only asked for money once. So, there is that.

I sold lots of my art and crafts when I was younger. I realized long ago though, it would not be a good money making career. It was more of a hobby.

“Conservatives do tend to be realists but does not prevent them from writing good fiction, being good painters etc”

Thank you. I’m an artist with a MFA. I taught art at California State University, Los Angeles. I am slightly to the right of Attila the Hun. It is true many in the arts are liberal, but please watch the generalizations.

There are many conservative artists. They maintain some activity outside their art that pays for their lifestyle. I have know several brilliant artists who worked a variety of jobs. They are typically not lunatics producing eccentric blasts of cultural vilification. When the art world begins searching for quality craftsmanship and beauty they will find it, in abundance.

Because the incidence of mental illness runs FAR STRONGER in artistic people than it does in the general population.

The most romantic thing to an artist and liberals in general is “shhhtruggle” and they see everything through that lens, often making them up where none exist. There are imaginary victims and there are imaginary oppressors with themselves as the arbiters. A shhhtruggle free world is a dead world to liberals.

[’shhhtruggle’ is how Moochelle says struggle]

Look at the SciFi Hugo Awards. If you are not a liberal writer you are not nominated . Also can’t get a contract from the publisher
