Collapsed Miami bridge was put in place WITHOUT the central tower and suspension cables [tr]

Engineering experts say investigators looking into the collapsed ‘instant’ bridge in Miami will want to know why a central tower which is usually built to support a suspension bridge was not in place when it collapsed onto Tamiami Trail on Thursday afternoon.

Last week, Florida International University’s official Twitter account posted a rendering of the bridge in its completed form as envisioned by the planners before its opening to foot traffic in early 2019.

The rendering shows a tall central column with cables connecting it to the main span.

Engineers say the design is known as a ‘cable-stayed bridge,’ which is a kind of suspension bridge, according to USA Today.

>> “We still don’t know the proximate cause for the failure.” <<

O really?

How about total incompetence from start to finish!

From the beginning this project had -99% chance of success.

“it broke exactly where the workers stood.”

Apparently they were tensioning the PT cables.

Not a chance!

Tensioning is done from the abutments, not on the deck.

I owned a second home in Brevard County, FL for about a year, almost two winters. I sold it Jan, 2017. Looking back, that was a good idea!

The foreclosure was a good investment for me, as I made about 30% on my investment, after fixing it up. However, in Florida....no more, nada, and I will look locally or SC! Hurricane Mathew ripped off the mailbox, but otherwise it was okay. Of course, I was praying 24/7, while in NC. lol Too nerve racking!

You are right about changes in FL. SCARY.

The bridge span over the river was going to shorter. The tower was offset. It was not going to be in the center. You can clearly see it in the Rendered drawing.

Good point. The article said they were adjusting the cables, but I wonder what they were actually doing.

“”. . . was named an Obama era Department of Transportation ‘Champion of Change’ in 2015.”
This bridge failure and the resulting death and destruction, including lives and property losses, simply mirrors the “changes,” and their “consequences,” advocated and carried out by such “champions of change” as Progressive cultists like the Clintons and Obama impose on formerly free American citizens—the same citizens they lure into supporting them by promising “hope,” “change,” and goodies for the wealthy and the poor, as well as every “identity” group they can identify and tag.

Though slower in imploding and revealing the consequences of Progressive socialist policies, citizens ultimately suffer similar results as those of the “bridge.”

Ayn Rand wrote of such things. Who is John Galt?

From the drawing, the tower is in the middle of the structure. Only one span of the bridge was set in place. The suspension cables couldn’t be put in place until the opposing span was in place.

I don’t know how they thought the bridge span could be left in place unsupported in the interim.

Tension is applied with a large torque wrench applied to the nuts on the threaded ends of the cables. This is done from the side, not behond the end of the rod, due to the possibility of a cable failing as the tension is applied, and shooting out like a missile.

have the support structure, and test it at the same time? That is insane! Building the support first would make sense, but who says common sense exists anymore in some places?

I’m not sure that is as much the issue as, who would let pedestrians walk on a bridge without all its supports. This bridge was open to pedestrians when it collapsed.

I’m worried there might be a backlash against Muslims over this collapse.

I assume your knowledge is the result of extensive experience with this specific construction method rather than just blowing smoke.

Actually as a board certified safety engineer, I cannot understand not closing the roadway during the bridge installation and testing.

I have no doubt that the hazard analysis part of the task was limited or left out entirely.
